Abstract:
This invention relates to portable area denial systems and to related methods. We describe an intruder deterrent system, the system comprising a plurality of nodes, each said node having a strobe light, and at least one of said nodes having an intruder-detecting sensor, wherein the system is configured to flash at least one of said strobe lights on detection of an intruder by said sensor to deter said intruder.
Abstract:
The present invention involves the identification of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) based on lectin binding patterns in choroidal and/or Bruch's membranes. The use of lectins to target therapeutic agents to CNV also is disclosed.
Abstract:
A structural element (20) for a vehicle is disclosed. The element comprises an at least partially transparent body (22), having a three-dimensional array of interconnected chambers arranged to allow light to pass through the body so as to provide at least partial visibility through the element to an occupant of the vehicle when the structural element is mounted in the vehicle. An example of a structural element to which the invention may be applied is a pillar for a car.
Abstract:
A heat sink for a semiconductor device is disclosed. The heat sink comprises a body of a heat-conducting material, which includes a three-dimensional array of interconnected chambers arranged so that fluid may pass through the body via the chambers. The body further includes a channel for a cooling medium, the channel passing through, but being closed off from, the array of interconnected chambers. The heat sink may be used, for example, in a liquid cooling system for a microprocessor.
Abstract:
A view enhancing system for a vehicle is disclosed. The vehicle has a structural element which in normal operation tends to obstruct a vehicle operator's view. The system includes a camera (20, 22, 24) adapted to form an image of a region of the vehicle surroundings where the operator's view is obstructed by the structural element, and display means (52) connected with the camera and mounted on the structural element for displaying an image representing the view that would be seen by the operator if the structural element were transparent or not present. In a disclosed example, the structural element is a pillar. A rear view display system for a vehicle having a camera mounted on the outside of the vehicle adapted to capture an image of a rear view from the vehicle and a rear view mirror including a reflective layer and a display layer is also disclosed.
Abstract:
A proprotor blade (27a, 27b, 127a, 127b) having a fixed, spanwise, leading edge slot (215) located in at least the inboard portion of the proprotor is disclosed. The slot (215) is formed by a selectively shaped slat (217) disposed in a selectively shaped recessed area (219) located at the leading edge (202) of the main portion of the proprotor blade. The slot (215) is selectively shaped so that a portion of the airflow over the lower airfoil surface of the proprotor blade is diverted between the main portion of the proprotor blade and the slat (217) and exits at the upper airfoil surface of the proprotor blade. The present invention may be used on both military-type tiltrotor aircraft (11) and civilian-type tiltrotor aircraft (111) with only minor variations to accommodate the different shapes of the proprotor blades.

Abstract:
A hydraulic stop (2) for use in drilling or countersinking operations comprising a rotatable body for rotating a tool (6) about its axis and a cage (20) adapted to contact the surface of a workpiece (8) when the tool has penetrated into the workpiece by a predetermined distance and to actuate a trip mechanism comprising a plungeroperated hydraulic valve (30, 32) as the tool (6) penetrates the workpiece more than the predetermined distance, wherein the plunger (28) is of adjustable length. When actuated the trip mechanism allows the body to shrink in length suddenly. The cage (20) is axially adjustable in relation to the body to set the predetermined depth at which the trip mechanism actuates. Drainage means is provided comprising a plurality of holes spaced around the circumference of the body to which the cage (20) is mounted to allow drainage of coolant whatever the axial position of the cage (20).
Abstract:
A method and system adapted for use in a mobile telecommunication network is described. The invention describes a rating and routing system which is adapted to enable an efficient rating and routing of data transactions being transmitted through a network. Based on a comparison of identifiers associatable with a subscriber to the network, with a set of parameters defined for data transactions, the system of the present invention is adapted to enable an accurate assessment and allocation of the correct rating tariff value to a specific transaction and the routing of that rated value to an appropriate destination defined for the user.
Abstract:
A convertible isolation pod for an individual patient formed from sealable flexible plastic sheeting including an air intake grommet at the head end and an air exhaust grommet at the foot end of the pod each of the grommets being equipped with a Heimlich valve to provide unidirectional air flow within the pod where the air is filtered to remove contaminants.
