    Abstract: Wet disc brake system (10) comprises a housing assembly (12) and brake callipers (14). Housing assembly (12) is provided with openings (24) for seating cylinders (22) of respective brake callipers (14). The callipers (14) are coupled to a structural component of a vehicle to which the system (10) is fitted and in particular a flange (28) of an axle housing (16). This enables reactive forces created during a braking operation to be transmitted via the callipers to the flange (28) and axle housing (16) rather than being carried by housing assembly (12). As housing assembly (12) does not bear any substantive load, it may be made of a relatively light weight construction or material. The application is also directed to a disc brake system comprising a service and park brake calliper provided with at least two cylinders wherein at least one cylinder houses a hydraulically operated service piston and at least one cylinder houses a park piston that is applied by a spring and released by air pressure.

    Abstract: A lightweight brake system (10) comprises a multi-component non load bearing light weight housing (12), and a bracket (14). The housing has an assembled state defining a space (16) for accommodating a brake mechanism (18) and a rotatable braking member 2(0). The housing (12) has axially aligned first and second openings (26, 28). The bracket (14) includes a: fixing portion (30), a housing connection portion (34) and a brake coupling portion (36). The fixing portion (30) locates within the second opening (28) to enable mechanical fixing of the bracket (14) to a structural component (32) supporting the rotatable member (20). The housing connection portion (34) enables fixing of the housing (12) to the bracket (14). The brake coupling portion (36) facilitates coupling of the brake mechanism (18) to the bracket (14) at a location within the housing (12).

    Abstract: A wet disc brake system (10) for vehicles having gross axle load rating of at least 6000kg comprises a housing assembly (12), brake calipers (14), a rotor (20), a volume of a liquid brake lubricant retained within the housing (12) and a cooling system (300) to cool the liquid brake lubricant. Suitably the brake calipers (14) that are selectively operable to bring one or more friction surfaces, such as brake pads (110), into contact with between 30% to 90% of the area of the rotor braking surface. The cooling system (300) includes a heat exchanger (302) located in the housing (12) and an associated coolant circuit (310) effective to cool the surrounding liquid brake lubricant and components of the brake system within the housing and the housing itself. The heat exchanger (302) is, in one form, arranged with a plurality of plates (328) and scoops (329) to provide cooling by natural and forced heat convection. Also disclosed is an operator feedback system (350) providing visual (352), aural (354) or tactile (356) feedback to the operator on the basis of brake temperature.
