Abstract:
According to one embodiment, a method includes positioning a trocar having a pressure sensor in or on the trocar into a patient cavity such that distension of the patient cavity causes an altitude of the pressure sensor to increase. The method also includes distending the patient cavity by supplying an insufflation gas to the patient cavity, thereby increasing an altitude of the pressure sensor from a first altitude to a second altitude. The method also includes determining a change in pressure at the pressure sensor resulting from increasing the altitude of the pressure sensor from the first altitude to the second altitude and controlling the supply of insufflation gas to the patient cavity in response to the determined change in pressure resulting from increasing the altitude of the pressure sensor from the first altitude to the second altitude.
Abstract:
The invention provides an impactor for transmitting an assembly force to a component of an orthopaedic implant. The impactor has first and second telescoping parts which are biased apart by means of a main spring. The main spring is compressed when an assembly force is applied to the parts. An indicator is latched against movement until it is released when the extent of the compression of the main spring by the application of an assembly force exceeds a threshold. The indicator then moves to provide the user with an indication that a minimum assembly force has been applied.
Abstract:
A combination radial arm band and hemostatic material preferably including potassium ferrate and a cation ion exchange resin in powder or granular form (WOUNDSEAL) or formed into a solid tablet (STATSEAL) and having improved topical effectiveness in the arresting of blood flow from a puncture wound into the radial artery made during transradial diagnostic or interventional catheterization procedures. The combination reduces time and pressure needed to achieve hemostasis and decreases arterial damage as compared to use of a radial arm band alone. In one aspect of this disclosure, careful limitation of applied force and time of applied force against the STATSEAL tablet reduces likelihood of harm to the radial artery while minimizing time to achieve hemostasis.
Abstract:
An apparatus for treating uterine disorders by effecting necrosis of the uterine endometrium. The apparatus comprises a catheter with a bladder which can be inflated with a hot medium. To prevent inflation of the bladder during heating of the medium, and therefore to prevent too early inflation, the apparatus operates the inflation means in the negative direction during heating of the inflation medium.
Abstract:
RF tissue ablation devices are provided. Aspects of the RF tissue ablation devices include an elongated member having a proximal and distal end, first and second jaws at the distal end, wherein the first and second jaws are configured to apply intra and inter RF energy to tissue disposed between the jaws during use, and a connector at the proximal end for operatively connecting to a RF energy source. Also provided are systems that include an RF tissue ablation device operatively coupled to a RF energy source, as well as kits that include the devices and methods of using the devices in RF tissue ablation applications, including cardiac applications.
Abstract:
Abstract:
The present invention is directed to a pedicle screw fixation system which can be made for either posterior cervical, thoracic, lumbar spine, or elsewhere. With this type of system a surgeon can implant a pedicle screw system utilizing the same instrument set for an open or closed procedure. The system is designed to avoid cross threading and splitting of tulip heard by use of an outer threaded tulip and reducing donut. The system also provides the ability for superior angulation for hard to reach areas that are common in spinal procedures. The system allows for a bio-absorbable part (the reduction donut) that enhances fusion in the coming months after the procedure. With the elongate tulip portion of the system the user is able to avoid the need for other cannula type instruments; the need of additional parts; the need of additional instruments which could introduce bacteria into the patient and the need for fluoroscopy. The system is completely cannulated so as to permit a HOLDING wire driven procedure. The rods employed with these pedicle screws can be either flexible or rigid. Preferably a rod which is octagonal in cross section is employed with the system so as to prevent rotation in the tulip and slippage.
Abstract:
Drug eluting vascular closure devices and methods for closing a blood vessel puncture site disposed at a distal end of a tissue tract are described. The devices and methods rely on a combination of the body's own natural mechanism to achieve hemostasis with chemical and/or biological agents to accelerate the hemostatic process. One method includes the steps of introducing a closure device through the tissue tract and deploying an expansible member at a distal end of the device within the blood vessel to occlude the puncture site. A chemical and/or biological sealing member disposed proximal the expansible member is then displaced so as to expose a chemical and/or biological region or release region of the device. At least one chemical and/or biological agent is thereafter released from the device and into the tissue tract to accelerate the occlusion process in the tract.
Abstract:
A surgical stapling system including a driver and a staple where the driver is connected to the staple. In previous surgical stapling systems, the driver and the staple were not connected. A surgical stapling system in accordance with the present invention may have fewer components, less assembly and manufacturing time, and may accommodate larger staples which are at least partially embedded in the driver. In various embodiments, a surgical stapling system comprises a staple, the staple including a deformable member, and a stapler, the stapler including an anvil, a staple cartridge for removably storing the staple, and a cam movable between a first position and a second position. In these embodiments, the surgical stapling system further comprises a driver attached to the staple, the driver being operatively engaged with the cam to move the staple toward the anvil when the cam is moved between the first position and the second position.
