Periodontal disorders such as disorders associated with a dental implant are treated. An average power for a laser is selected via a user interface on a tablet, along with a set of permissible laser parameters provided in response to the selected average power. A gingival trough or flap is created around the implant with the laser. Infected tissue is selectively ablated or denatured via photothermolysis, and a pocket is lased around the affected implant. Marginal tissues are compressed against the implant.

The present invention generally relates to oral hygiene. In particular, embodiments of the invention relate to a multi-headed toothbrush and method for brushing teeth. It has been left for the present inventor to discover a solution to the problem of pinching that is typically associated with three headed toothbrushes. It has also been left for the present inventor to discover a solution to the challenge of transmission of sonic energy through flexible materials included in a brush head.

An apparatus (100, 200) for dental plaque detection, including a detection component (133) and a clearing component (146). The detection component may be configured to generate an air stream (30) and enable passage of the generated air stream through a distal probe tip (112) of a distal probe portion (110) of the apparatus to detect plaque based on measurement of a signal (510) caused by the plaque at least partially obstructing passage of the generated air stream through the distal probe. The clearing component may include a liquid reservoir and be configured to generate liquid droplets that are intermittently passed through the distal probe to prevent or clear a blockage (23) of the probe. Methods include clearing an blockage of a probe by intermittently passing a generated liquid droplet through the probe.

In accordance with the present disclosure, a personal hygiene device has a resonant motor and a motor control unit for applying a periodic voltage signal with a driving frequency at the resonant motor for driving the resonant motor into an oscillating motion with an oscillating frequency equal to the driving frequency. The motor control unit comprises a synthesizer circuit for digitally synthesizing the periodic voltage signal from voltage pulses of variable length provided with a pulse frequency higher than the driving frequency such that at least two voltage pulses are applied at least in one of two half cycles of each period of the periodic voltage signal.

An ultrasonic toothbrush having spatially extended functionality to treat various oral diseases in addition to removing plaque and treating gingivitis is disclosed. In addition to the ultrasonically activated bristles, the toothbrush incorporates a multi directional ultrasound transducer system, which spatially irradiates the oral cavity with ultrasonic pressure waves, operational to loosen plaque, to remove periodontal bacteria from teeth and gums, and to simultaneously treat and destroy disease causing bacteria and bacterial chains on the inside surfaces of cheeks and lips, providing relief from Recurring Aphthous Stomatitis, Lichen Planus, and Mucositis. Various configurations are disclosed, including user removable and replaceable brush heads and ultrasound treatment heads. A motorized version featuring sonic frequency orbital vibration brush head and bristle tufts is described.
