An optical fiber cleaving apparatus (10) that employs a microchip laser system (100) for cleaving an optical fiber (20) is disclosed. The microchip laser system is operably arranged relative to an optical system that receives an initial laser beam (116) and forms a focused laser beam (116F) that includes a focus spot (FS). The focus spot is directed to the outer surface of the optical fiber to create an optical damage zone (36) that includes at least one micro-crack necessary for performing the cleaving operation. Methods of aligning the optical fiber to the focus spot and performing the cleaving operation using the cleaving apparatus are also disclosed.

The method including heating a substrate to a predetermined temperature below its melting point; using a laser to form a melt pool on a surface of the substrate, wherein the substrate is positioned on a base plate, and wherein the laser and the base plate are movable relative to each other, the laser being used for direct metal deposition; introducing a superalloy powder to the melt pool; and controlling the temperature of the melt pool to maintain a predetermined thermal gradient on a solid and liquid interface of the melt pool so as to form a single crystal deposit on the substrate. A radiation zone created by the beam incident on the glass substrate, and the radiation zone is effectively formed into two portions by a coolant jet incident on the radiation zone. A method for scribing a fragile substrate, comprising the steps of heating a glass substrate (50) by continuously radiating a laser spot on the surface of the glass substrate (50) along an area in which a scribe line is formed at a temperature lower than the softening point of the glass substrate and, at the same time, continuously cooling the area near the laser spot by the cooling water injected from a cooling nozzle (37), whereby blind crack can be formed along the predicted scribe line. An imaging mechanism (40) images a blind crack forming area in proximity to an area on the surface of the glass substrate in which the cooling water is injected, and checks that the blind crack is formed based on the imaged image data.
