Abstract:
Methods of finishing an edge of a glass sheet comprise the step of machining the edge of the glass sheet into a predetermined cross-sectional profile along a plane taken transverse to the edge of the glass sheet with an initial average edge strength ESi. The methods also include the step of finishing the edge with at least one finishing member, such as an endless belt, without substantially changing a shape of the predetermined cross-sectional profile. In one example, a wet slurry including an abrasive can be applied to at least one of a finishing member and the edge of the glass sheet. After finishing the edge, example finished average edge strengths ESf can be at least about 250 MPa. In addition or alternatively, in another example, the ratio ESf/ ESi can be within a range of from about 1.6 to about 5.6.

Abstract:
A vehicular rearview mirror assembly includes a mirror casing, a reflective element and a mounting assembly for adjustably mounting the mirror assembly at a portion of the equipped vehicle. The reflective element has a front surface and a rear surface and a perimeter edge about its periphery and extending between the front and rear surfaces. The front surface generally faces a driver of the vehicle when the mirror assembly is normally mounted in the equipped vehicle. The rear surface of the reflective element may be attached to an attachment surface of an attachment plate or of the mirror casing to secure the reflective element relative to the mirror casing. The perimeter edge of the reflective element may be exposed and viewable by the driver of the vehicle when the reflective element is attached to the attachment surface and when the mirror assembly is normally mounted in the equipped vehicle.
Abstract:
A glass grinding apparatus (2) includes a base (4), a support grid (6) mounted on the base (4) to carry a work piece for grinding, a fluid holder (24) disposed below the support grid (6), a drive shaft (30) for rotating a grinding bit (8) above the support grid (6), a power source (32) for rotating the drive shaft (30), a fluid applicator (14) for applying irrigation fluid to a grinding bit (8) mounted on the drive shaft (30), and a splash protector (16) adapted for connection to the grinding apparatus (2) adjacent to the drive shaft (30) to trap irrigation fluid and grinding debris sludge that are spun off from the grinding bit (8) as it is rotated during grinding operations. The fluid applicator (14) is formed as a fluid transfer brush (40) that wicks irrigation fluid from the fluid holder to the grinding bit.
Abstract:
A tool for grinding and polishing of glass and surfaces of hard and brittle non-glass materials comprises abrasive which is for example ceric oxide, and bond, for example phenol-formaldehyde resin. The tool further comprises hollow or full or porous polyamide and/or polyethylene and/or polypropylene and/or polymethacrylate and/or polystyrene and/or glass and/or corundum microbeads of size of 1 µm to 200 µm.
