A die plate is provided for an underwater pelletizer. The die plate includes a die plate body and a solid face plate. The downstream face of the die plate body has a plurality of insulation holes drilled therein that reduce the surface area contact between the die plate body and the solid face plate that is secured to the downstream face of the die plate body to form the cutting surface. A circular groove is preferably milled into the downstream face of the die plate body, concentric with the outer perimeter thereof, to create an outer ring and a center boss with flush outer downstream surfaces that together form the downstream face of the die plate body for supporting the solid face plate. The insulation holes and groove are filled with a non-reactive atmosphere such as nitrogen, inert gas(es), a vacuum or a partial vacuum.

Provided is a process for making thermoplastic polymer pellets. The process has the following steps: (a) melting a thermoplastic polymer to form a polymer melt; (b) extruding the melt through a die to form a substantially continuous molten polymer extrudate wherein the die has a contact surface bearing a polymer coating having a surface energy of less than 25 mN/m at 20°C; (c) cooling the extrudate to form a cooled extrudate; and (d) pelletizing the cooled extrudate to form a plurality of polymer pellets. Provided is also a polymer pellet shipping system and a stable thermoplastic polymer pellet.

A pressure plate is provided with corresponding cone for use with an extruder. The plate comprises twin worms/screws which may be tangential or intermeshed, co-rotating or counter-rotating. The plate has sets of a plurality of substantially coaxial circular of polygonal slits or openings that are either tangential to each other or intermesh into one another. Each slit is provided with at least one supporting rib member. The plate and cone are arranged such that the open cross-sectional area continuously decreases from the exit of the plate to the exit of the cone, leading to one or more die orifices. Also provided is a process for manufacture of bars extruded from an extruder using such a plate, as well as an installation for manufacture of such bars. The bars may comprise surfactant and typically such bars have reduced cracking and mushing tendencies.

Movable pins are positioned into the path of material flow through an internal cavity. The pins are arranged across the path of flow upstream of the extrusion die. By moving the pins in and out, the flow of material through the cavity can be controlled at different locations across the width of the path of flow to the die. Manual and automatic controls can be provided for determining the position of the pins and thereby controlling the flow.

In certain embodiments, a process for producing clear plastic films comprises creating a high resolution digital art file having a rendering of an image, wherein the image has one or more fill areas and one ore more borders composed of a series of vector lines, lines, dots, or marks representing cutting paths of various depths or heights. The image from the art file is assigned depths or heights and converted into a relief file, and subsequently engraved into a die such that the die has one or more engraved paths creating a topography mirroring that of the image in the art file or relief file. A film is then extruded with the image from the die being infused into the film as it is extruded. The resulting film includes one or more engraved paths or lines making up the image, the paths or lines having a maximum depths or heights equal to, and/or greater than one third of the thickness of the film.
