A nozzle is provided for controlling the flow of extruded material, such as e.g., rubber material, from an extrusion machine. Movable pins are positioned into the path of material flow through an internal cavity. The pins are arranged across the path of flow upstream of the extrusion die. By moving the pins in and out, the flow of material through the cavity can be controlled at different locations across the width of the path of flow to the die. Manual and automatic controls can be provided for determining the position of the pins and thereby controlling the flow.

An extruder according to the invention comprises at least two annular conical feed gaps (9) one within the other, formed between a rotatable rotor (1) and a stator (4, 5). At least some of the material to be extruded is subjected in the different feed gaps (9) of the extruder alternately to a higher pressure and then to a lower pressure. The rotor (1) or stator (4, 5) between the feed gaps (9) can then be balanced such that the pressure effect provides a hydrodynamic bearing, whereby, when the extruder is used, even at worst a very small force is exerted on the other bearings of the rotor (1) or stator (4, 5). By the method of the invention, a product can also be produced which contains cross-linked and at least partly oriented polyethylene.

The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for preparing an extrudable product, and an extruded product. An extruder according to the invention comprises at least two annular feed gaps (4) between which there is a stator (3), and a rotatable rotor (1) is provided outside the outermost feed gap (4). Inside the stator (3) there is at least one rotatable rotor (2). The product to be extruded can thus be provided with radial orientation without a separate orientation unit. By supplying continuous fibres (20) for example through the stator (3) it is possible to prepare a very strong product that is radially oriented and that comprises axial continuous fibres (20) as reinforcement.

A continuous method of extruding an oriented plastics article of improved strength. A chemically reactive polymer (33a, 33b), monomer or other compound is included in the matrix material(s) and a (multilayer) parison (34) is extruded or melt-formed having built-in thermoplastic orientation caused by shear or caused by elongational flow. A reaction can be activated in the molten state thereof by additional heat resulting in a cross-linked structure or at least the mobility of the molecules being reduced, resulting in a longer relaxation time which makes the freezing of permanent orientation possible. The soft matrix can be stretched while still hot in the hoop and/or axial direction. Then, the product thus obtained is calibrated and cooled in an oriented state.
