A blow moulded plastics bottle (10) or similar contanier has a neck (12) formed to receive a bottle closure, a side wall (11) and a base (13), and includes an internal spider (16) attached to the side wall (11) and extending across the inside of the bottle (10). The material in the side wall (11) and spider (16), at least, of the bottle (10) is bi-axially oriented. The plastics bottle is preferably formed by initially injection moulding a perform and then by a stretch-blow moulding technique. The internal spider (16) may extend substantially the whole length of the bottle from its neck to its base, or alternatively, the internal spider (16) only extends over part of the length of the bottle (10). The internal spider (16) preferably has the form of plane webs extending generally radially across the inside of the bottle and joining together at the central longitudinal axis of the bottle. The internal spider (16) formed inside the bottle (10) reinforces the bottles and so helps them to resist an internal pressure and enables a plastics bottle to be formed with shapes that are polygonal in section and preferably square and which have re-entrant curves in their side wall (11).

There are various ways to latch a closure onto a container. It has been found that for blowmolded containers 30 that the support flange 36 for the bottle preform can later be used as a part of the latch mechanism 14 to secure a closure 10 onto the container. Preforms have a support flange by which the preform is handled prior to being placed into the mold and in the mold. Prior to being placed in the mold, the preform is heated to about 85 °C to about 200 °C. During this time and in the mold, it will be supported by the support flange. This support flange is used after the container is blown and filled as one part of the latching mechanism of the closure. The closure will have a portion that is an interference fit with the support flange of the bottle to thereby secure the closure to the bottle.

The present invention relates to a container (10) for liquid products comprising a base wall (12) and a side wall (11), whereby said container has an improved resistance to top load and inward bulging of its side wall. This improvement is achieved by a container having a side wall comprising at least a reinforcing rib (20). Indeed, said reinforcing rib is able to reduce the amount of inward bulging and to improve the resistance to top load, therefore reducing the danger of getting crackings in said side wall.
