The present invention is directed to a hybrid locomotive that can operate in a multitude of operational modes, including a slug operating mode, an energy storage operating mode, an independent operating mode, and a power source operating mode, and/or can provide electrical energy to an external power distribution system, such as a power grid,catenary, and third rail.

In a locomotive consist having at least a lead locomotive and a remote locomotive with a distributed power system on each locomotive in the locomotive consist, a system for establishing distributed power operations of the locomotive consist from a single location, the system including a communication network providing communications to and from at least one distributed power system, and a distributed power setup unit in communication with the distributed power system by way of the communication network. The distributed power setup unit has at least one of a processor, display and an input device to allow a user to establish distributed power operations.

A method is provided for operating a power system (16). The method includes receiving an operator request for a propulsion direction change. The method also includes selecting a power boost map in response to the propulsion direction change request. The power boost map increases the power rating of a power source (34) of the power system. In addition, the method includes directing power into the power source. The method further includes regulating the power system and accelerating a power source speed according to the power boost map when the power is no longer being directed into the power source.
