A plastic or metal wide mouth container (10) with a metal closure, the container having an opening defining an axis and an outwardly projecting first member around the external surface of the container, the first member comprising a plurality of circumferentially spaced apart first portions, each first portion having an element with elongate upper and lower surfaces, said upper and lower surfaces thereof being substantially horizontal in the circumferential direction. The metal closure has a top part and a skirt part, the skirt part comprising an inwardly projecting second member around an internal surface thereof, the second member comprising a plurality of circumferentially spaced apart second portions, each second portion having an element with elongate upper and lower surfaces, said upper and lower surfaces thereof being substantially horizontal in the circumferential direction. The horizontal elements of the second portions are of a length such that they can pass through spaces between the first portions and are locatable beneath the first portions so as to secure the metal closure to the container. The closure has a sealing member (23) for providing a seal with a sealing surface of the container, the sealing surface (13) being a substantially vertical surface about the interior or exterior of a neck portion of the container and the second portions on the closure having an upwardly inclined end at one end thereof and a downwardly inclined end at the other end thereof which extend beyond said elongate upper and lower surfaces thereof, respectively. Rotation of the metal closure in a tightening direction drives the second portions down the downwardly inclined ends to move the closure downwards and to compress the seal member in a substantially horizontal direction into sealing engagement with the vertical sealing surface. Rotation of the closure in a loosening direction drives the second portions up the upwardly inclined ends to move the sealing member from the sealed position to a secured venting position. Further rotation in the loosening direction is required to remove the closure from the container.

Improved pre-forms for Flair and Flair-type applications are presented. In exemplary embodiments of the present invention, if two different materials which do not bond together are used to make a pre-form, then such a pre-form can be made by a bi- injection process, using the same mold. In such exemplary embodiments, first the outer pre-form can be fashioned, and then the inner pre-form can be molded through a center hole provided at the bottom of the outer pre-form. The two pre-forms are then connected to each other. The two materials can be different, such as PET and a polyolefin or polyamide, or for example, they can even be the same, such as PET/PET, if steps are taken to prevent their bonding during the molding of the second pre-form layer. In such a process, a non-stick coating can be sprayed on the surface that will be between the pre-forms, where the second perform will touch the first one, and after such application, the second container can be molded, also in a 2C process. The order of manufacture can be either outer then inner, or inner then outer, in various exemplary embodiments. If outer then inner, the non-stick coating can be sprayed on the inside of the first molded outer perform, followed by molding of the inner prefrom. If the reverse, the non-stick coating is sprayed on the outside of the first molded inner perform, then followed by the molding of the outer perform. The material from which the inner container is made, the degree of shrinkage it will experience relative to the outer container, and the concomitant maximum hot fill temperature it can thus support, can all be designed for a given application, use or range of uses.

A closure that includes a top panel and a skirt extending downwardly from a peripheral edge of the top panel is provided. The skirt terminates in a plurality of spaced thread engagement flanges for engaging the thread of the neck of a container. The closure includes a polymer-filled channel which connects the top panel to the skirt. When engaged with the threaded neck of a container, the neck is forced into the channel and engaged by the polymer so that the channel and polymer provide lateral rigidity to the neck. This rigidity prevents the neck from deflecting from the forces resulting between the threads and thread engagement lugs when the forces therebetween are increased to the level required to adequately seal the closure to the container.
