A process for preparing a mixed metal oxide, which process includes providing a metal carbonate-containing compound including a metal carbonate-containing anion with at least one cation; and at least a second cation; subjecting the metal carbonate-containing compound to ion exchange with the second cation to form a mixed metal-carbonate complex; and subjecting the complex to a heating step to form a mixed metal oxide.

A dense β"-alumina/zirconia composite solid electrolyte and process for fabrication are disclosed. The process allows fabrication at temperatures at or below 1600 °C. The solid electrolytes include a dense composite matrix of β"-alumina and zirconia, and one or more transition metal oxides that aid the conversion and densification of precursor salts during sintering. The composite solid electrolytes find application in sodium energy storage devices and power grid systems and devices for energy applications.

There is provided a process for preparing alumina. The process comprise leaching an aluminum-containing material (for example an industrial waste product chosen from red mud, fly ashes and a mixture thereof), with HCl so as to obtain a leachate comprising aluminum ions and a solid, and separating the solid from the leachate. Then, the process comprises reacting the leachate with HCl so as to obtain a liquid and a precipitate comprising the aluminum ions in the form of AlCl 3 , and separating the precipitate from the liquid. Then, the precipitate is reacted with a base. Finally, the process comprises heating the precipitate under conditions effective for converting the precipitate into Al 2 O 3 .
