A water-resistant porcelain enamel coating and method of making the same is provided. The porcelain enamel coating is prepared using a ground glass, preferably a borosilicate glass frit, and mill additions of silica or silicon carbide and a zirconia compound. The mixture is applied to a metal substrate and fired, resulting in a water-resistant coating that resists cracking and crazing. The coating is particularly useful in water heaters.

Such reverse photochromic borosilicate glass compositions may be thermally darkenable. The borosilicate glasses may be strengthened via ion-exchange strengthening treatment. The borosilicate glasses may retain their reverse photochromic and thermally darkenable properties even after ion-exchange strengthening treatment.
