It is a novel norbornene derivative useful as a precursor monomer for producing a cycloolefin polymer which is excellent in transparency and heat resistance and reduced in water absorption and the birefringence and wavelength dispersion of which have been regulated at will. Also provided is a norbornene polymer produced by ring-opening (co)polymerization which is excellent in transparency and heat resistance, has high solubility in organic solvents, and has peculiar birefrengence and wavelength dependence.
