The disclosure further relates to fuel compositions including the fuel additive composition and a liquid or solid combustible fuel. Related methods include methods of making the fuel compositions and methods of burning the fuel compositions. The resulting fuel compositions have several improved combustion properties such as improved combustion efficiency, improved combustion energy/calorie content, reduced sulfur generation, and reduced ash generation.

The invention provides fuel mixtures containing fuel oil, glycerol, glycerol impurities and non-ionic surfactants. The mixtures remain homogeneous longer and are more chemically stable than previous mixtures. Upon combustion, the mixtures generate reduced SOx, NOx and particulate matter emissions compared to residual fuels and offer improved engine performance over previous mixtures.

Disclosed is a novel bicycloheptane-based compound. A cetane number improver containing the bicycloheptane-based compound and diesel fuel containing the cetane number improver are also provided. This cetane number improver has lower toxicity and superior stability, compared to a conventional cetane number improver, and can greatly improve the cetane number of fuel oil such as diesel, thus increasing combustion efficiency of fuel oil.

A motor fuel providing higher gas mileage comprising gasoline produced from petroleum and from about 1 to 30wt% of mesitylene. This fuel can advantageously contain conventional additives used in gasoline. The use of mesitylene in gasoline blend yields a fuel blend with a higher research octane number and motor octane number. In addition, an improved jet fuel is provided, having from 1-10 wt% biomass-derived mesitylene added thereto, having improved carbon emission characteristics while maintaining required specifications. Further, an improved bio-fuel is provided, which may function as a replacement for conventional Jet A/JP-8 fuel and has lowered carbon emission specifications, the bio-fuel comprised of 75-90 wt% synthetic parafinnic kerosene (SPK) and 10-25 wt% mesitylene.
