The present invention relates to an alloy cast iron for producing a seal, to a seal, and to a method for producing such a seal. The alloy cast iron for producing a seal according to the present invention contains 3.8 to 4.2 wt % of carbon, 3.3 to 4.7 wt % of nickel, 2 to 5 wt % of molybdenum, 1.2 to 2.0 wt % of silicon, 16 to 18 wt % of chrome, and 0.8 to 1.5 wt % of manganese, with the remainder being iron. According to the present invention, the seal is produced by centrifugal casting, to thereby improve productivity and the wear resistance of the seal.

A wear resistant, high-impact iron alloy member (20, 22) suitable for use in an impact rock crusher and a method of making the same. The invention provides a white iron alloy member (20, 22) having at least one wear surface (24) with carbide granules encapsulated in a matrix (28) of white iron and contained in a selected region adjacent the wear surface (24) of the member (20, 22). The iron alloy member is made by a method of casting comprising the steps of: placing a molding insert (35, 40) in a mold (60) at a selected location adjacent the wear surface (24); positioning a quantity of carbide granules (29), most preferably tungsten carbide granules (29) in the molding insert (35, 40) before pouring; and pouring molten white iron alloy into the mold (60) to form the casting. The tungsten carbide granules (29) are substantially contained at a selected location by the molding insert (35, 40), and the resulting casting (20, 22) can be heat treated and cooled to provide a component for a rock crusher or the like which exhibits improved resitance to wear.

The casting has a solution treated microstructure that comprises a ferrous matrix of retained austenite and chromium carbides dispersed in the matrix, with the carbides comprising 15 to 60% volume fraction of the alloy. The invention relates to a method for producing and processing casting materials for indefinite rollers with a sleeve part. The aim of the invention is to improve cast parts, especially rollers in the last stands of a strip rolling mill, in terms of their use-related properties and their service life. To this end, (A) the melt is produced with a chemical composition of the following in wt. % 2.0 to 3.5 C, 1.0 to 2.0 Si, 0.5 to 2.0 Mn, 1.0 to 3.0 Cr, 3.5 to 4.9 Ni and 0.2 to 2.9 Mo with the remainder being iron and impurities and (B) more than 0.5 wt.% and up to 5.9 wt.% vanadium is added and dissolved in this composition and (C) the composition of the melt is adjusted by alloy-technological means, by determining the concentrations of carbon, silicon, nickel and the effective sum of the carbide-forming elements, in such a way that when it hardens, the microstructure that forms has 1.0 to 3.0 vol. % graphite, on the condition that there are more than 20 graphite particles per mm of observation surface of a metallographic section and that the remainder consists essentially of martensite, 8 to 35 vol. % eutectic carbides and at least 1 vol. % finely divided monocarbides, (D) the melt then being cast into a mould and allowed to harden into a body which is (E) subjected to a heat treatment.

The melt is cooled at a rate of approximately 2 DEG C per minute or faster to form a white cast iron material. The addition of boron in amounts between about 10 ppm and 150 ppm by weight effectively combines with nitrogen dissolved in the molten iron and thus serves to minimize the influence of nitrogen on the stability of carbides and pearlite and also forms BN, which can serve as nuclei for the precipitation of graphite.
