The present disclosure provides a stable aqueous composition comprising an aqueous component, a hydrophobic complex comprised of a multivalent metal salt complexed with nanocellulose fibers and lignin, with the composition exhibiting a viscosity sufficient to prevent coalescing and settling of the hydrophobic complex in the aqueous component. The composition may be used to coat surfaces of articles to produce a hydrophobic surface. Once applied to the surface, the aqueous coating is spread to form a wet film covering the surface and is then dewatered and dried to produce a dried hydrophobic coating.

The invention relates to a method of reducing the dusting tendency of printing paper, preferably of uncoated printing paper to be used in inkjet printing. The method of the invention comprises the steps of: providing a base paper comprising fillers and applying a sizing composition to the surface of said base paper, wherein the pH of said sizing composition has been adjusted to between 4 and 6. The fillers in said base paper comprises calcium carbonate in the form of e.g. precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC), ground calcium carbonate (GCC) and/or chalk. It has been shown that when the pH of a surface sizing composition is reduced, a calcium salt is formed and the amount of calcium carbonate at the surface of the paper is reduced, whereby problems with dusting are avoided. Moreover, the calcium salt formed at the surface of the paper enhances the printing properties of the produced paper.

The invention relates to a method for modifying nanofibrillar cellulose composition, comprising - preparing fibrous dispersion of ionically charged nanofibrillar cellulose (NFC), and - applying heat treatment at a temperature of at least 90°C to the fibrous dispersion until the viscosity of NFC starts to decrease. The viscosity of the heat-treated NFC is reversible by applying shear forces to the NFC.

The barrier layer may be situated on one of the surfaces of the packaging or form one of multiple layers of a multilayered packaging coating or be situated as a coating on one side of an inner bag situated within the packaging.
