A method includes: sensing a defect on a cast strip surface, the cast strip being cast from molten metal or alloy by a casting system, determining an adjustment amount and/or direction of a casting system component based on the identified surface defect, and providing the adjustment amount and/or direction to an operator for adjustment of the casting system component and/or commanding that the casting system component be adjusted by the adjustment amount and/or direction.

Method and communication device adapted for detecting an opening in a casing of a communication device, wherein the device comprises an acoustic speaker and an acoustic sensor. The acoustic speaker is arranged to distribute an acoustic signal within a casing of the communication device and the acoustic sensor is adapted to receive an acoustic signal response constituted of the acoustic signal and an echo of said acoustic signal. The communication device further being adapted to analyze the received acoustic signal response and determining if the casing constitutes a closed space.

A method of inspecting a plate-like structure (2) by means of ultrasound for detecting anomalies (3) in the structure, comprising: positioning at least three ultrasonic transmitting/receiving probes (4) in Hertzian contact with a surface of the structure (2) and in a polygonal configuration such that an inspection area (6) of the structure is defined by the configuration; successively drive one probe (4) at the time as an ultrasound transmitting probe generating an ultrasound wave propagating into a plane of the structure in the inspection area (6), while at least one of the other probes (4) is arranged to be used as an ultrasound receiver detecting a resulting wave provided by the ultrasound wave propagating through the inspection area (6); acquiring signals corresponding to waves detected by the second probes (4) and comparing the acquired signals with reference signals for a corresponding inspection area of a reference structure without anomalies.

In accordance with an embodiment, a method for inspecting pipe is provided. The method includes transmitting an ultrasound pulse through a pipe or a fluid container from inside the pipe or the fluid container. The method further includes receiving echoes via a plurality of sensors, based on the ultrasound pulse, and combining echo data from the plurality of sensors. The method additionally includes deriving an environmental assessment based on the combining the echo data.

Embodiments relate generally to systems and methods for determining a toughness value for a material of a metal part, wherein the method comprises detecting a texture of a carbon steel material using an ultrasonic microscopy unit, wherein the ultrasonic microscopy unit uses one or more waveforms including at least one of straight beam, phased array, shear wave, and time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD); determining elemental analysis of the carbon steel material; combining the texture with the elemental analysis to generate a toughness value for the steel; comparing the generated toughness value with a standard curve, wherein when the toughness value falls below the curve, the carbon steel material comprises an acceptable toughness, and when the toughness value falls above the curve, the carbon steel material comprises an unacceptable toughness.

The invention provides a field device configured to be fitted through a single mounting aperture in a vessel. The device preferably includes a vibrating fork and a temperature sensor, the signals from which are processed within the device to provide an output indicative of whether a property of a medium in contact with the device is above or below a threshold. This output may be communicated wirelessly to a remote location. Other features are described.
Abstract:
Systems and methods of determining settlement characteristics of a drilling mud are disclosed. Conditions under which heavier elements of the drilling mud settle under the influence of gravity can be determined. Samples of drilling mud can be placed in testing cells, and ultrasonic test pulses can be transmitted through the samples. Responses to the test pulses can be detected and compared to other responses detected at different vertical positions within the testing cell. Settlement can be detected when the responses from different vertical positions are generally dissimilar. An environmental temperature of the testing cell can be changed over a testing time interval, and a settlement temperature can be determined by detecting a divergence in the responses from different vertical positions.

Im Rahmen der Erfindung wurde eine Einrichtung zur Überwachung der Qualität eines in einem Kraftstofftank bevorrateten Kraftstoffs entwickelt. Hauptanwendungsgebiet sind dieselbetriebene Fahrzeuge. Somit ist der Kraftstoff bevorzugt Dieselkraftstoff. Die Einrichtung zeichnet sich dadurch aus, dass Mittel zur Bestimmung des Siedepunkts des Kraftstoffs vorgesehen sind. Weiterhin wurde im Rahmen der Erfindung auch ein Verfahren zur Überwachung der Qualität eines in einem Kraftstofftank bevorrateten Kraftstoffs entwickelt. Hauptanwendungsgebiet sind dieselbetriebene Fahrzeuge. Somit ist der Kraftstoff bevorzugt Dieselkraftstoff. Das Verfahren zeichnet sich dadurch aus, dass der Siedepunkt des Kraftstoffs oder eine Abweichung dieses Siedepunkts von einem Normalwert gemessen wird. Bei der Analyse realer ausgefallener Einspritzpumpen wurde erkannt, dass ein zu niedriger Siedepunkt des Kraftstoffs dazu führen kann, dass dieser ausgast. Ir der Folge bilden sich in der Einspritzpumpe Blasen, in denen lokal die nötige Schmierung nicht mehr gegeben ist. Weiterhin ist die Schmierungswirkung darauf angewiesen, dass der Kraftstoff eine bestimmte Mindestviskosität aufweist. Ein niedriger Siedepunkt ist auch mit einer niedrigen Viskosität korreliert. Somit ist insgesamt der Siedepunkt (initial boiling point, IBP) ein besonders guter Indikator gerade für diejenigen Normabweichungen des Kraftstoffs, die besonders kostspielige Schäden nach sich ziehen.

An acoustic measurement system 300 for an industrial process asset 114 includes a process measurement device 102 providing a value representative of an acoustic signal near the industrial process asset 114 based in part on a signal from an acoustic sensor 104 positioned near the industrial process asset 114. A second acoustic sensor 316 provides an acoustic value and a noise reduction component 324 uses the acoustic value from the second acoustic sensor 316 to affect the value provided by the process measurement device 102 so that the value provided by the process measurement device 102 is more representative of an acoustic signal generated by the industrial process asset 114.
