A method for receiving a device capability associated with a service guide is described. The method may include (a) receiving a content fragment within said service guide; (b) receiving capabilities syntax element within said content fragment that indicates required capabilities for decoding and presenting signaled content; (c) wherein said capabilities syntax element includes: (i) an element capability code (ccode) that represents a certain capability or capability group defined by 1 to 4 hexadecimal digits (1*4HEXDIG); (ii) an element capability string code (capability_string_code) having a first operand (ubyte) that represents a registry identified by capability category code and a second operand (1*utf8) that specifies a capability or capability group within said registry, where said first operand (ubyte) is defined as 1 to 3 digits (1*3DIGIT) and said utf8 is defined as one or more UTF-8 characters (*(UTF8-char)); (d) decoding said service guide.

An intelligent TV is provided. The intelligent TV provides a management system for favorites and reminders. Selecting a program, associated with a television channel, allows a user to be presented with a list of options, such as making the program a favorite, the associated channel a favorite, or setting a reminder for programs of a like title, channel, and time.

When a viewer initiates channel surfing, a surfing guide is presented to the viewer. The surfing guide provides multiple channel regions, where each channel region is associated with a different channel that is available to the viewer. Each channel region will include a channel window in which an image or video content from the corresponding channel is displayed. When the surfing guide is being displayed to the viewer, the channel window in at least one of the channel regions will include video content, which is derived from a low bandwidth video stream for the associated channel. Each channel region may also have a channel information area in which textual information about the corresponding channel is provided to the viewer.

Afin d'aider à la sélection d'un flux de données, à restituer au niveau d'un dispositif de réception, parmi une pluralité de flux de données reçus par le dispositif de réception. Au niveau d'une unité de traitement, on reçoit simultanément une pluralité de flux de données, et des données auxiliaires respectivement associées auxdits flux de données. Puis, on détermine, sur la base des données auxiliaires reçues, au moins une information d'aide à la sélection à afficher pour chaque flux de données. Ensuite, on couple les flux de données avec les informations d'aide à la sélection respectivement déterminées. Ces flux de données couplés sont alors transmis au dispositif de réception.

Method and system for enabling different information-containing units such as advertisements, to be included in or otherwise presented in conjunction with broadcast content so that individuals receiving the same content can be presented with different information. A suitable information unit for each individual is independently selected based on information about each user. For example, when the broadcast content is on multiple channels and the user's terminal is receiving content on one channel having information that is not suitable for that user, the individual's terminal may be directed to switch to another channel selected from among a plurality of different channels based on the user's settings, profile and/or rules. As such, the information, or data units, being provided to each user can be customized thereby providing an extremely effective form of direct and targeted advertising in the broadcast of various content, such as television programs, radio programs, data, videos and audio.
