Embodiments of the present invention produce and define a relationship between local voltage and power measurements at a node of an electrical network and system conditions on a remote branch of the network. These local measurements are used to determine an optimal voltage set point at the node that, if realised by a reactive power resource, would affect the flow of reactive power or line current at one or more particular remote branches of the power system in a manner captured by the derived relationship. The change in reactive power required to obtain this voltage set point is also calculated based on local measurements.

A starter system for start up of a combined heat and power unit comprising a generator which is connectable to the grid. The starter system comprises a variable frequency drive, VFD, operable to receive power from the grid. The VFD reduces the frequency of the power, and provides the reduced-frequency power to the generator to start the generator. The starter system further comprises a bypass relay configured to bypass the VFD. The bypass relay allows direct connection between the grid and the generator after the generator has started. The variable frequency drive is configured to operate temporarily during start up of the combined heat and power unit.

Systems and methods ("utility") for providing Low Voltage Ride Through (LVRT) capabilities for wind turbines are disclosed. The Utility includes a directly connected synchronous generator (214) that is designed to have a high dynamic pull-out torque. To remain connected to the power grid (224) during low voltage events, the utility boosts the excitation current applied to the rotor of the synchronous generator (214). Further, the utility may include a torque regulator in the form of d torque-regulating gearbox (210), which in turn includes adjustable guide vanes (624) that may be positioned to reduce the amount of mechanical torque applied to the rotor shaft of the synchronous generator (224) during low voltage events. Additionally, the utility may also include a braking System (206) and a pitch control System (234) to limit the acceleration of the wind rotor (202) shaft during low voltage events.
