An endophyte or endophyte culture of N. Iolii species is described that, in combination with a host grass does not cause typical symptoms of ryegrass toxicosis in grazing animals and also contains levels of compounds from the class of janthitrems epoxides to individually or in combination protect the host grass from pests or abiotic stresses or both. Uses and methods are also described to produce and characterise the combination as well as alternative uses for compounds from the class of janthitrem epoxide compounds.

The present invention provides a process for growing eukaryotic microorganisms, which are capable of producing lipids, in particular, lipids containing polyenoic fatty acids. The present invention also provides a process for producing eukaryotic microbial lipids.

The invention provides novel mutations, mutation combinations or mutational profiles of HIV-1 reverse transcriptase and/or protease genes correlated with phenotypic resistance to HIV drugs. More particularly, the present invention relates to the use of genotypic characterization of a target population of HIV and the subsequent correlation of this information to phenotypic interpretation in order to correlate virus mutational profiles with drug resistance. The invention also relates to methods of utilizing the mutational profiles of the invention in databases, drug development, i.e. , drug design, and drug modification, therapy and treatment design, clinical management and diagnostic analysis.
Abstract:
An apparatus (figure 8) for temperature control of biological/chemical samples employing liquid metal (83) is described. A gallium-indium alloy may be used to provide excellent temperature control. Methods of using liquid metal to provide temperature control for biological/chemical samples are also described. A preferred use for the described liquid metal-heating apparatus is to provide precise temperature control for polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

A process for obtaining a protein hydrolyzate by enzymatically hydrolyzing a vegetable protein material containing saccharides by using a mold culture in a liquid reaction system, which comprises mixing the vegetable protein material with the mold culture, effecting the reaction first under aeration and agitation within a temperature range of from 15 to 39 DEG C, then ceasing the aeration and completing the reaction within a temperature range of from 40 to 60 DEG C. By using this method, enzymatic hydrolyzates of vegetable protein materials can be prevented from browning.

The present invention is directed to a method for detection, characterization and isolation of nucleic acids encoding proteins of a desired property, such as a particular cellular localization. The invention further provides for rapid expression of such proteins or glycoproteins in mammalian cells and for facilitated purification of the novel secreted proteins or glycoproteins. Further, the invention provides for radioactive labelling of the novel proteins or glycoproteins, for rapid identification of sites of binding including animals and for rapid production of infective viral vectors for use in gene transfer.

A new alpha -L-arabinofuranosidase enzym which is highly thermostable, and is effective for the hydrolysis of arabinofuranosyl residues from L-arabinose containing polysaccharides and hemicelluloses is disclosed. The enzyme is produced by color variant A. pullulans strain NRRL Y-21792. This alpha -L-arabinofuranosidase may be used in conjunction with xylanolytic enzymes for the treatment of hemicellulosic materials to produce fermentable sugars, particularly xylose and L-arabinose.

Strains of the aerobic mycoparasitic fungus Coniothyrium minitans having high levels of beta -glucanase activity have been obtained. Preferred strains have been deposited at the American Type Culture Collection under accession numbers 74415, 74416, 74417, 74418, 74419, 74435 and 74436. Methods for mutagenizing C. minitans 74415 and obtaining strains having beta -glucanase activity are provided.
