There is described a surface protection structure of diamond for surfaces of security devices, in particular provided in doors of safes or in locks of armoured doors, comprising a layer of reduced thickness which is formed by powders of diamond grains which are enclosed in a binder material and which is provided to be applied to the surfaces, diamond grains having a grain size dimension between 20 mesh (850 μm) and 120 mesh (125 μm) being distributed in the layer with a surface density having a value between 0.025 and 1 carat/cm 2 , and the binder material having in the layer a surface density having a value between 0.01 and 0.4 grammes/cm 2 , with such a coverage level of the diamond grains that the depth of the binder material measured over the thickness of the layer has a value between 50% and 100% of the nominal dimension of diamond grain.

Cutting elements having accelerated leaching rates and methods of making the same are disclosed herein. In one embodiment, a method of forming a cutting element includes assembling a reaction cell having diamond particles, a non-catalyst material, a catalyst material, and a substrate within a refractory metal container, where the non-catalyst material is generally immiscible in the catalyst material at a sintering temperature and pressure. The method also includes subjecting the reaction cell and its contents to a high pressure high temperature sintering process to form a polycrystalline diamond body that is attached to the substrate. The method further includes contacting at least a portion of the polycrystalline diamond body with a leaching agent to remove catalyst material and non-catalyst material from the diamond body, where a leaching rate of the catalyst material and the non-catalyst material exceeds a conventional leaching rate profile by at least about 30%.

In more specific examples, the cutting tool has a sintered compact including 30 to 80 vol. % cubic boron nitride, between about 4 vol. % and about 1 5 vol. % aluminum and/or aluminum compound and/or aluminum alloy and/or combinations thereof, and a binder phase, wherein the binder phase includes TiN and about 3 to about 5 vol. % ZrN, and wherein the cubic boron nitride has a grain size of less than 20 microns. Cutting tools of the disclosed composition display improved performance, particularly at higher operating speeds, e.g., about 200 m/min or greater.

An improved method for synthesizing superabrasive particles provides high quality industrial superabrasive particles with high yield and a narrow size distribution. The synthesis method includes forming a substantially homogeneous mixture of raw material (12) and catalyst material (14) or layers of raw material and metal catalyst. A plurality of crystalline seeds (20) is placed in a predetermined pattern in the mixture or one of the layers to form a growth precursor (24). The growth precursor is maintained at a temperature and pressure at which the superabrasive crystal is thermodynamically stable for a time sufficient for a desired degree of growth. Advantageously, the patterned placement of crystalline seeds and disclosed processes allow for production of synthetic octahedral diamonds and improved growth conditions generally. As a result, the grown superabrasive particles typically have a high yield of high quality particles and a narrow distribution of particle sizes.

The shaped abrasive particles comprise alpha alumina having an average crystal grain size of 0.8 to 8 microns and an apparent density that is at least 92 percent of the true density. Each shaped abrasive particle has a respective surface comprising a plurality of smooth sides that form at least four vertexes. Shaped abrasive particles, abrasive articles including them, and methods of using are also disclosed.
