Abstract:
Curved lenses and methods for making curved lenses are described. One embodiment of a method of making a curved lens includes curving a lens blank made of a linear polarizer layer laminated together with a plurality of polymeric layers. The lens blank is curved by engendering rotational motion about a rotational axis of a roller having a forming surface thereon and lateral motion of a belt in contact with the forming surface. The lens blank is heated and pressed between the belt and the forming surface at a pressure, the pressure being supplied by tension on the belt. The pressure is maintained for a time sufficient to allow the lens blank to conform to the shape of the forming surface. Methods of the invention may be used to make curved lenses with different polarization properties and curvatures.

Methods and systems for producing thermoformed articles from pre -cut thermoformable billets (26) are provided. The system may include a heating apparatus (16) for heating the billets, a billet thermoformer (18) for thermoforming the billet into an article, a discharge system (20) for evacuated the formed articles from the thermoformer, and an inspection system for inspecting each of the formed articles for the presence of a defect. Conveyors (12) and billet carriers (24) are provided for transporting the billets between the various components of the system, and loaders (14) are provided for loading the billets onto the conveyor and/or billet carriers.

A thermoplastic resin foam, which is high in thickness-direction compressive strength and low in flexural modulus of elasticity, can be set pliably along a curved applicable portion such as body's outer surface, and can effectively absorb an impact force imparted from the outside; and an expandable thermoplastic resin molded product providing the above foam. An expandable thermoplastic resin molded product comprises an expandable thermoplastic resin sheet-form material of expandable thermoplastic resin having a sheet body and many projections formed scattered on at least one surface of the sheet body, and an elastic thermoplastic material layer laminated on at least one surface of the expandable thermoplastic resin sheet-form material so as to be spread over the outer surfaces of the projections; and a thermoplastic resin foam obtained by foaming the expandable thermoplastic resin molded product.

An apparatus for thermoforming a thermoplastic article comprises an extrusion die for extruding a sheet of thermoplastic and a rotating wheel having at least one mold member. The mold member includes a male mold or forming cavity for receiving at least a portion of a substantially non-oriented (i.e., non-tensioned) thermoplastic sheet. The mold member is selectively heated and/or cooled during thermoforming to maintain the sheet in a molten or thermoformable state. The mold member also comprises a stripper plate maintained at a predetermined temperature or temperature distribution for inducing a predetermined degree of crystallinity to the sheet. The stripper plate enables the articles to be separated from the mold without distortion. In one embodiment, the thermoformed article has at least two and preferably at least three distinct regions of thermally-induced crystallinity.

A method includes identifying first geometry of a first mold associated with a first dental arch and a second geometry of a second mold associated with a second dental arch. The method further includes determining, based on the first geometry and the second geometry that the first mold and the second mold are to be used for simultaneous forming of a first dental appliance and a second dental appliance on a plate in a dental appliance manufacturing system. The method further includes causing, based on the first geometry and the second geometry, one or more portions of the dental appliance manufacturing system to be configured to form the first dental appliance and the second dental appliance.

A machine and method of forming multi-compartment pouches is disclosed in which two pouches formed on separate adjacent formers (1, 3) are brought together in register and the lidding webs (9, 15) of the pouches joined to form a combined pouch (33). The pouches may be held on the formers (1, 3) by vacuum until the pouches are joined whereupon the vacuum holding one of the pouches on its former (1) is released while maintaining the vacuum holding the other pouch on its former (3) so that the combined pouches (33) are held on that former by the vacuum until the vacuum is released.
