Disclosed is a method of providing closed-cell polyolefin foam having reduced blowing agent content to an end user comprising (a) extruding the polyolefin to form the essentially continuous foam structure defining a multiplicity of channels extending generally longitudinally therethrough; (b) intermittently crimping the essentially continuous foam structure such that the channels extending therethrough are intermittently substantially closed off; (c) intermittently severing the essentially continuous, intermittently crimped foam structure at the crimps therein to form discrete foam structure portions having crimped end portions; (d) cooling the crimped, discrete foam structure portions to an extent sufficient to prevent substantial shrinkage of the crimped, discrete foam structure portions upon initiation of release of the flammable blowing agent from the foam; (e) excising the crimped end portions from the remainder of the crimped, discrete foam structure portions to initiate release of the flammable blowing agent and form uncrimped, discrete foam structure portions; and (f) providing the uncrimped, discrete foam structure portions to the end user.

A foamed product that generates no smoke when incinerated, has a low calorific value, and achieves a desired dimension and thermal insulation performance is provided. A foamed product 1 is formed by heat-mixing, in an extruder 11, a paper pellet 7 that is a mixture of a fine paper powder having a particle diameter of 30 to 200 µm and starch, a container recycle pellet 8 that is a mixture of polypropylene, polyethylene, and polystyrene, foamable polypropylene 9, and water 10. A weight distribution is set so that the paper pellet 7 is 50 to 65% by weight, the container recycle pellet 8 is 15 to 25% by weight, the foamable polypropylene 9 is 10 to 30% by weight, and the water 10 is 10 to 20% by weight to these resins and other materials.

A method for dispensing a foamed material onto a substrate surface, comprising the steps: generating a relative movement between the substrate surface to be coated and an exit opening of a material dispensing apparatus, mixing at least two material components in a mixing device to provide a free-flowing, foamable dispensing material, generating a pressure differential between the mixing device and the dispensing region located downstream in the direction of flow from a discharge cross-section of the exit opening, conveying the dispensing material from the mixing device for the dispensing material to the exit opening, and discharging the dispensing material from the exit opening onto the substrate surface. The invention proposes that the dispensing material be kept under such a pressure in the adjacent region upstream from the discharge cross-section of the exit opening that the dispensing material in this region has a foaming rate that is less than 10% of the foaming rate which ensues at the end of the foaming process.

An extruded propylene resin foam which is obtained by extrusion-foaming a propylene resin and has an expansion ratio of 10 or higher and an average cell diameter smaller than 400 µm. The foam contains a fibrous filler in an amount of 60 wt.% or smaller based on the whole molding material. Due to this constitution, the extruded foam can have many cell walls therein. The extruded propylene resin foam can hence efficiently block external radiant heat and has excellent heat-insulating performance. The fibrous filler is arranged along the thickness direction. Because of this, even when the extruded foam is distorted in the thickness direction slightly, this generates a high stress. The extruded foam can hence have improved energy-absorbing ability.

An apparatus and a method for making a biodegradable material are disclosed. The apparatus comprises an extruder for forming a foamed starch rod and a heated die 6 for modifying the rod. The rod is fed through the heated die by feeding rollers 4. A bonding agent application station 10 is located downstream of the heated die and upstream of a packing unit 12. The method comprises forming a foamed starch rod by extrusion and passing the rod through a heated die. The rods may be formed into sheets or blocks by cutting, the application of bonding agent and adhering the cut rods together.
