There are provided improved processes for the manufacture of enriched pitches, carbon fiber precursors, carbon fibers, and graphite fibers. The improvement comprises employing an elevated wiped-film evaporator (105) in a wiped-film evaporator system comprising the wiped-film evaporator (105) and a means for recovering enriched pitch (119), such as a positive displacement pump (119), to form an enriched pitch from catalytic pitch and regulating the operating conditions of the wiped-film evaporator system to provide the desired enriched pitch. The wiped-film evaporator (105) is located a specific distance above the means for recovering enriched pitch (119). The vertical distance between the outlet of the wiped-film evaporator (105) and the inlet of the means for recovering enriched pitch (119) is within the range of about 3 to about 15 meters, preferably about 6 to about 15 meters. Preferably the wiped-film evaporator (105) is heated with Dow Chemical Syltherm heat transfer media or its derivatives or equivalents.

A simple manufacturing process for obtaining a carbon/carbon composite of superior performance is provided without using a carbon fiber fabric which is expensive and without going through the step of fixing fibers together using a binder. A precursor fiber for a carbon fiber which precursor fiber has been rendered infusible is subjected to uniaxial pressing at a temperature lower than the temperature adopted in the infusiblizing treatment, and then a carbonization treatment is performed. According to the present invention, a primary-pressed carbon material can be produced without using a binder, thus resulting in that not only the carbon material but also a carbon/carbon composite can be produced in a simple manner.

A thermally conductive polymer composition includes polymer matrix such as thermoplastic resin or thermoplastic elastomer and a graphitized carbon fiber which serves as a thermally conductive filler. The graphitized carbon fiber is made from a mesophase pitch. The mesophase pitch is spun, infusibilized, carbonized, pulverized, and graphitized to form powdery graphitized carbon fibers. Preferably, the graphitized carbon fibers have a diameter of 5-20µm, an average particle size of 10-500µm, and a density of 2.20-2.26g/cm 3 . The composition may be molded to form a thermally conductive molded article such as a thermally conductive sheet. The thermally conductive polymer composition and thermally conductive molded article have high thermal conductivity and transfer large amounts of heat from electric or electronic parts.

A process for preparing nitrogen-containing isotropic pitch, comprising the steps of mixing a petroleum heavy oil, a nitrating reagent and water to prepare a homogeneous dispersion, thereby contacting the petroleum heavy oil with the nitrating reagent in the homogeneous dispersion state to prepare a crude nitrated heavy oil, and subjecting the crude nitrated heavy oil to refining, thermal polymerization and vacuum distillation. According to the process of the invention, a petroleum heavy oil containing a large amount of light oil components and being liquid at ordinary temperature, from which pitch has been hardly prepared conventionally, is used as a starting material for preparing pitch, and there can be obtained nitrogen-containing isotropic pitch of homogeneity and high quality having a desired softening point of from a low softening point to a high softening point, though such pitch was unable to be obtained so far.
