A difluoride derivative represented by the general formula: R?1-(A1-Y1)¿m-A2-CF=CF-C=C-A?3-(Y2-A4)¿n-R2, wherein A1 through A4 represent each trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-cyclohexenylene or 1,4-phenylene; m and n represent each 0 or 1; and R?1 and R2¿ represent each C¿1?-C10 alkyl, halogen or cyano. The compound is lowly viscous and light-stable, and hence can provide a liquid crystal composition having high response speed.

Disclosed is a process for the preparation of cis-1,1,1,4,4,4-hexafluoro-2-butene comprising contacting 1,1,1-trifluorotrichloroethane with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst comprising ruthenium to produce a product mixture comprising 1316mxx, recovering said 1316mxx as a mixture of Z- and E-isomers, contacting said 1316mxx with hydrogen, in the presence of a catalyst selected from the group consisting of copper on carbon, nickel on carbon, copper and nickel on carbon and copper and palladium on carbon, to produce a second product mixture, comprising E- or Z-CFC-1326mxz, and subjecting said second product mixture to a separation step to provide E- or Z-1326mxz. The E- or Z-1326mxz can be dehydrochlorinated in an aqueous basic solution with an alkali metal hydroxide in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst to produce hexafluoro-2-butyne, which can then be selectively hydrogenated to produce Z-1,1,1,4,4,4-hexafluoro-2-butene using either Lindlar's catalyst, or a palladium catalyst further comprising a lantanide element or silver.

Provided are a catalyst and a catalyst precursor that use a catalytic metal other than Pd and that exhibit the CC reaction activity similar to when Pd is used. Provided are a catalyst and a catalyst precursor that exhibit the similar CC reaction activity when using Pd or a catalytic metal other than Pd, without using a carrier such as metal and without using piranha solution. A composite wherein catalytic metal nanoparticles are dispersed in a continuous phase comprising a polymer having C2-6 alkylene group units and phenylene group units (an alkylene group unit being bonded to at least the first and fourth position of the phenylene group unit). The particle diameter of the catalytic metal nanoparticles is at most 20nm. A composite structure including a substrate, and the aforementioned composite provided to the surface of the substrate. The present invention provides one-step processes for the production of chlorinated and/or fluorinated propenes. The processes provide good product yield with low, e.g., less than about 20%, or even less than 10%, concentrations of residues/by-products. Advantageously, the processes may be conducted at low temperatures than 500°C so that energy savings are provided, and/or at higher pressures so that high throughputs may also be realized. The use of catalysts or initiators may provide additional enhancements to conversion rates and selectivity, as may adjustments to the molar ratio of the reactants.

The present invention provides 1,7,8-trifluoro-2-naphthol and a derivative thereof as intermediates for efficiently producing a trifluoronaphthalene liquid crystal material. A method for efficiently producing a trifluoronaphthalene liquid crystal material using such intermediates is also disclosed. A naphthol derivative having the following general formula (I) is disclosed. (I) A method for producing a trifluoronaphthalene compound having the following general formula (IV), (VI) or (VIII) using the naphthol derivative as a raw material is also disclosed.
