Dysphagia, or abnormal swallowing of foods and/ or liquids, affects people of all ages from the newborn to the elderly. Management of dysphagia is commonly done by the prescription of texture-controlled diets. Ideally, the most appropriate modification of food consistencies should follow from a clear assessment of the swallowing problem. Rheology and swallowing are connected at the diagnosis level. The "gold standard" technique is a videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS). The swallowing process can be visualized using videoradiography by employing either ready-to-use commercial contrast medium or by mixing food with barium sulphate (BaSO 4 ), making it radiopaque. Unfortunately, there is no standardization to perform VFSS. This lack of standardization leads to variability of results as well as their interpretation. In practice, lack of standardization often requires that individual speech pathologist, dieticians and dysphagia food manufacturers determine their own dietary consistencies. Another possibility is the use of encapsulated MRI superparamagnetic contrast agents for oral administration. The main goal of this invention has been to develop new and improved formulations of carriers/vehicles for radio-opaque (barium sulphate) or magnetic contrast agents (superparamagnetic iron oxide) that can be used as ready-to-use/ powder commercial formulations as contrast media for imaging diagnosis (VFSS or MRI) of dysphagia.

The present invention relates to a process for the manufacture of optionally doped nanoparticulate metal sulfate nanoparticles wherein the metal is selected from polyvalent metals or monovalent transition metals, said process comprising the step of heating a reaction mixture comprising a) a polar organic solvent comprising at least two hydroxy groups or a polar organic solvent comprising at least one sulfoxide group, b) a source of a polyvalent metal or monovalent transition metal, a sulfate source, and optionally a dopant metal source, and c) a base selected from i) bases having an aromatic N-containing heterocycle with the exception of imidazole ii) bases having an aliphatic N-containing heterocycle, iii) aliphatic hydroxy-substituted amines iv) aliphatic polyamines v) aromatic amines vi) ammonia and ammonia-releasing compounds vii)metal hydroxides, and metal sulfates obtainable by this method. The resulting sulfate nanoparticle show a high degree of whiteness and an excellent dispersibility in water and according to preferred embodiments also in methanol.

The present invention relates to a novel pH triggered, targeted controlled release system. The controlled delivery system of the present invention is substantially a free-flowing powder formed of solid hydrophobic nano-spheres comprising pharmaceutical active ingredients that are encapsulated in a pH sensitive micro-spheres. The invention also relates to the processes for preparing the compositions and processes for using same. The controlled release system can be used to target and control the release of pharmaceutical active ingredients onto certain regions of the gastrointestinal tract including the stomach and the small intestine. The invention further pertains to pharmaceutical products comprising the controlled release system of the present invention.

The invention relates to synthesis of nanoparticles, in particular to methods for producing nanoparticles with a networks consisting of Z sulphate (Z = magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), strontium (Sr), barium (Ba) or the binary mixtures thereof). The inventive method consists in synthesising the nanoparticles by crystal growth from an ion Z source and a sulphate ion source in a synthesis liquid phase mixture. The aim of said invention is to produce in a simple way barium sulphate nanoparticles having a small diameter, said particles being uniformly dispersed in water or other solvents. For this purpose, co-ordinating solvents like glycerine, glycol ethylene and other polyethylene glycols, polyalcohols or dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO) are used for the synthesis mixture. In the preferred embodiment, barium is used in the form of chloride and the sulphate source in the form of tetrabutylammonium hydrogen sulphate.
