By means of the inventive process, a reduced propionic acid content acrylic acid product is enabled having a propionic acid content comparable to acrylic acid products from the conventional two stage oxidation of propylene, but wherein the acrylic acid has been produced with a higher propionic acid content by alternative methods.

The invention provides a method for qualitatively and quantitatively detecting methyl malonic acid in a clinical sample that also may contain succinic acid and homocysteine, said method involving a liquid chromatography separation step followed by a mass spectroscopy detection step, said method comprising the steps of: a) providing a sample that may contain methyl malonic acid and/or succinic acid and optionally homocysteine; b) injecting said sample in a mobile phase comprising a high amount of water-miscible organic solvent; c) eluting said mobile phase containing said sample through a liquid chromatography column containing zwitterionic groups covalently bound to carriers as a stationary phase; d) detecting the possible presence of methyl malonic acid and succinic acid and optionally homocysteine by mass spectroscopy detection; and e) determining the presence and optionally the amounts of said organic molecules using calibration data.

The present invention relates to a novel sorbent suitable for use as a stationary phase in a chromatography column, the core of which consists of an organic polymer of synthetic or natural origin. Further, the carrier according to the invention exhibits a plurality of covalently bonded non-aromatic zwitterionic groups on its surface. Additionally, the invention also relates to a method for purifying a particular biological macromolecule, such as a protein or a nucleic acid, by zwitterionic ion exchange chromatography as well as an ion exchange column suitable for use in zwitterionic ion exchange chromatography.

The method includes contacting the sample with a bifunctional material that contains an amino group and a carboxyl group and is positively charged at a first pH to allow binding of the nucleic acid to the bifunctional material; and extracting the nucleic acid at a second pH higher than the first pH from the complex.
