Method for removing hydrocarbon products from water surfaces which consists in putting said hydrocarbon products in contact with a polypropylene previously treated using a procedure which includes: (a) mixing a polypropylene with at least one silicon compound having a sterically hindered amine group in the molecule; (b) melting the above mixture at a temperature and for a time which is sufficient to form a single liquid phase; (c) cooling the mixture until a solid is formed which is then reduced into the desired physical form; (d) extracting the silicon compound from the above solid with a solvent.

The present invention relates to a high-strength porous film or sheet consisting essentially of a high-molecular-weight polyethylene resin having a viscosity-average molecular weight of not less than 300,000, wherein the said film has a thickness of 5 to 50 µm, an air permeability of 200 to 1,000 sec/100 cc, a porosity of 10 to 50% and a pin puncture strength of not less than 600 gf/25 µm, and a process for producing the said film.

A separator of a battery wherein an organic electrolyte is used, which is made of a microporous film having a matrix constituted of a polyethylene having such a molecular weight distribution that a portion having a molecular weight of 1,000,000 or above accounts for 10 wt.% or above and a portion having a molecular weight of 100,000 or less accounts for 5 wt.% or above and a polypropylene having a weight-average molecular weight of 10,000 to 1,000,000 in an amount of 5 to 45 wt.% of the total amount of polyethylene and polypropylene. The microporous film has a thickness of 10 to 500 νm, a porosity of 40 to 85 % and a maximum pore diameter of 0.05 to 5 νm. This battery separator can be readily produced by extrusion-molding a mixture of the polyethylene having the above-specified molecular weight distribution, the polypropylene having the above-specified weight-average molecular weight, an organic liquid and fine inorganic powder to form a film, and then extracting the organic liquid and the inorganic powder from the film. It has not only excellent stability but also excellent chemical resistance, mechanical strength and ion permeability, and is extremely useful as the separators of not only a lithium cell but also other primary and secondary cells wherein an organic electrolyte is used.

A multi-layer, microporous polyolefin sheet is provided with at least two microporous polyolefin layers autogenously bonded together to have the same porosity as prior to bonding. The sheet material is formed by blending a polyolefin with an additive which separates on cooling, extracting the additive from each layer with a solvent after cooling and drying the layers in contact to effect bonding. As compared to previous laminated products, the product does not have altered porosity at the interface nor contamination with bonding agents.

A porous membrane comprising a polyvinylidene fluoride resin and having a uniform, three-dimensional, network pore structure. The membrane has excellent chemical resistance, excellent filtering characteristics and excellent mechanical properties. The porous membrane can be produced by blending a polyvinylidene fluoride resin, an organic liquid and a powdery hydrophobic silica, subjecting the resultant blend to melt-molding to form a membrane, and extracting the organic liquid and the hydrophobic silica from the melt-molded membrane.
