    摘要: A multipoint fuel delivery system for an internal combustion engine includes fuel metering device(s) such as fuel injector(s) associated for selectively controlled injection of the second fuel to corresponding combustion chamber(s) of the internal combustion engine. A fuel supply manifold associates with fuel injector(s) for directing the second fuel to each fuel injector. An intake port adaptor mechanism adapts the intake port of the associated combustion chamber to receive the selectively controlled injection of the fuel from an associated fuel injector. The intake port adaptor mechanism may also engage the intake port so as to permit selective flow of the first fuel or the second fuel to the intake port of the selected combustion chamber. A control mechanism selectively controls the flow of the second fuel through each injector(s). The multipoint fuel delivery system make practical both dedicated or single-fuel multipoint injection and, alternatively, selective bi-fuel multipoint injection for an internal combustion engine.

    摘要: A fuel supply system for a single or multi-cylind­er internal combustion engine (1) of the compression ignition kind (eg a diesel engine) and including a liquid fuel injection means (2) for injecting liquid fuel into the combustion chamber(s) of the engine (1); the system employing a main supply source of liquid alcohol fuel (4) such as methanol as the principal fuel for the engine and an ether pilot fuel having a wider flammability range and lower ignition temperature than the principal alcohol fuel. Prescribed quantities of the ether pilot fuel are arranged to be delivered to the engine (1) during operation for mixing with the principal fuel (4) and ignition of the delivered pilot fuel to raise the temper­ature of the fuel mixture in the combustion chamber(s) sufficiently to enable full ignition under compression of the principal fuel. The system preferably including means for producing the ether pilot fuel from a bye-pass supply (7,8,9) of the principal liquid alcohol fuel (4) by way of a heat exchanger/catalytic convertor device 10; and including a condensation means (16,18) for removal of at least a part of any readily condensible content of the pilot fuel before delivery to the engine (1) to permit ignition under compression of the delivered pilot fuel.

    摘要: An attachment for operating an internal combustion engine (10) on either gaseous or liquid fuel incorporates a modified air cleaner-intake assembly (20) having spaced cover (38) and adapter (21, 27) plates between which is sandwiched a typical annular filter element (33). An annular diaphragm (51) connects an inner plate (53) to the cover plate (38) to form a chamber (62) therewith on one side of the inner plate (53) into which gaseous fuel is admitted. During gaseous fuel operation gas pressure in the chamber (62) maintains the inner plate (53) adjacent the adapter plate (27) to form therewith an annular venturi (58) into which gaseous fuel from the chamber (62) is admitted through a ring of ports (63) through the inner plate (53) at the venturi (58). During liquid fuel operation incoming air lowers the pressure in the chamber (62) sufficiently so that the inner plate (53) automatically moves away from the adapter plate (27) to provide an unobstructed air only path to the engine (10).

The exhaust system includes an exhaust passageway, with an exhaust treatment component provided in the exhaust passageway. A thermal enhancement device communicates with the exhaust passageway and is located upstream from the exhaust treatment component, wherein the thermal enhancement device is operable to raise a temperature of an exhaust located in the exhaust passageway during a switch between the first fuel and the second fuel that is provided to the dual-fuel engine. The exhaust treatment system can also include a by-pass pipe in communication with the exhaust passageway that by-passes the exhaust treatment component, wherein during combustion of the first fuel by the dual-fuel engine, the by-pass pipe is open. During combustion of the second fuel by the dual-fuel engine, the by-pass pipe is closed.
