The container has an outlet (22) in the base of the container which is sealed by a closure member (23). After filling with product the container is cooled and to dispense product from the container it is located in a seating of dispensing apparatus, the closure member is removed and product is extruded through the outlet by pressurising product in the container. Product extruded is shaped by the outlet 22 and the product thus shaped is passed into a receiver located beneath the outlet, passage of product from the outlet being under gravity.

A filling unit and a method for filling a confectionery mass into a container or a mold includes a fill housing with a filling nozzle (2) and at least two dosing pistons in a cylinder which is connected to the fill housing. In the fill housing, a valve is arranged for each cylinder. A mixing block with internal ducts connects each of the outlets with a respective internal duct in the filling nozzle. The confectionery mass is conducted from a filling nozzle into at least one of the cylinders after which the confectionery mass is dosed down into the mold or container by actuating the dosing pistons. The speeds of the pistons are controlled independently of each other, providing varying patterns in longitudinal direction of the ice-cream/confectionery product. The movement of the filling unit relative to the container or mold can be varied providing additional options for variation in patterns.

A process for preparing a confectionery product comprises depositing a viscous confectionery material 10 from a nozzle 12 onto a surface 14. A bulk of the viscous confectionery material forms a mass 10 and a remainder of the viscous confectionery material forms a tail 16 linking the nozzle and the mass. At least a portion of the tail is subjected to heat after deposition so as to break the tail and thereby separate the mass from the nozzle. The heat source is arranged to heat a portion of the space between the nozzle and the surface. The heat may be supplied in the form of infrared radiation from an infrared source 18 such as an infrared heater or LASER. The confectionery product may comprise a chocolate shell 14 with a filling such as caramel.

The second sealing surface of the valve spindle is arranged for abutting the first sealing surface of the outlet orifice to thereby close the outlet orifice.
