A heat sealing assembly, for sealing at least two layers of thermoplastic film, is disclosed. It comprises a first jaw (11) and a second jaw (not shown), an electrical impulse heat sealing element (12) mounted on the first jaw (11), electrical terminals (17) connected to the element (12), and at least one electrically and thermally insulating film or tape (14) between the first jaw (11) and the heat sealing element (12). At least one of said jaws is capable of transverse motion and is adapted to collapse a tubular film made from the thermoplastic film and passing between said jaws. The improved heat sealing assembly has a first jaw (11) which has a thermally insulating material (16) embedded therein along a length about equal to the width of the flattened film and having a width at least as great as the width of the sealing element.

The open edge (5) of a plasticboard (1) is moved into a heating and sealing unit (13) having a metal form (14) with a U-shaped cross-section. A spacing tape (27) and a release tape (28) line the metal form (14). An induction or resistance heater (15) is coupled to the metal form (14) to raise the temperature thereof and heat the open edge to form a molten plastic (30) edge wall, with the outer edges of the edge wall (5) in sealing engagement with the form (14). The molten plastic (30) fills the cavity (29) between the form (14) and the edge wall (5) and forms a solid, continuous end wall (16) upon cooling of the molten plastic (30). A batch sealing unit (13) has a form moved directly into engagement with the edge wall (5) to be sealed. A continuous sealing unit (37) has an elongated form (40). A conveyor (38) moves the plasticboard (1) through the form (40) in a continuous flow path with the form (40) inclined to the path of the edge board to establish relative lateral movement. A cooling unit (35, 46) cools the end wall (16) as the board moves from the form. A release unit (28, 50) is located between the heating and sealing unit (13, 37) and the edge wall (5) to insure release from the sealing unit (13, 37) and to accommodate any offset surface portion in the edge wall (5) and thereby totally confine molten plastic (30) and form a smooth end wall (16).

A heat shrinkable wrap-around sleeve comprises a heat shrinkable sheet (2) with a heat stable strip (3) welded on one end. The free end of the heat stable strip is overlapped on the outer side of the opposite end of the sheet and welded thereto by heating applied directly on the outer side. This allows a good quality welded connection to be formed without requiring the use of hold-down adhesives. The sleeve advantageously can be manufactured by heated wedge welding.

A splice case for telecommunications cables is provided which is completely wraparound. Two rigid half shells (6) surround a wraparound impermeable sheet (4) to cover the central part of the splice. The impermeable sheet (4) provides sealing, and the half-shells (6) mechanical restraint. Wraparound end parts (12) are also provided and a sealing material (10) seals the impermeable shet (4) to the half shells (6) and/or end-parts (12), so that the seal thus formed in not put into peel when the splice is pressurised.

Zur Erzeugung eines genügenden Schweissdruckes ist der Luftdruck in der Blase grösser als der durch die Ausdehnung des Materials beim Schmelzen entstehende Druck.
