We describe methods and devices for manipulating optical signals. A method of manipulating an optical signal comprises providing a device (100) comprising a layer (106) of blue phase liquid crystal in the path of the optical signal; and applying a dynamically varying spatial pattern of voltages across the layer (106) of blue phase liquid crystal, thereby causing the refractive index of the layer (106) of blue phase liquid crystal to vary according the dynamically varying spatial pattern.

An optical switching device for wavelength divisional multiplexed signals uses cascaded arrays of optical steering devices for 1 x N routing of WDM optical signals, where N = 4, 8, 16, etc. Two cascaded arrays provide 1 x 4 switching; three cascaded arrays provide 1 x 8 switching; and so on. Each array is configured with independently controlled optical steering devices so that each wavelength channel of the WDM signal may be routed to any of N output ports. The optical steering devices may be micro-mirrors, liquid crystal-based polarization modulators, or a combination of both. By incorporating cascaded optical steering devices into a single WDM switching device, cost effective 1 x N switching of WDM optical signals may be realized.

A thin holographic optical switch (100) used in a liquid crystal display device (800) contains opposing transparent substrates, (102) transparent electrodes (104) between the substrates (102) and a diffraction grating (105) between the electrodes (104). The diffraction grating (105) contains regions of transparent polymerized photopolymers and cholesteric liquid crystal microdroplets. Refractive indexes of the photopolymers and liquid crystal are substantially the same when the electrodes have the same potential. The holographic optical switch (100) transmits broadband LED light when the potential difference between the electrodes (104) is zero and is polarization independent. The holographic optical switch (100) diffracts broadband LED light when the potential difference between the electrodes (102) is non-zero and is polarization independent.

A tunable optical wavelength selective filter comprises a dynamic holographic diffraction element (3) in combination with a fixed diffraction grating or hologram (2). The dynamic diffraction element (3) is preferably implemented as an electronically controlled image displayed on a pixelated spatial light modulator and in particular a spatial light modulating using opto-electronic integrated circuits fabricated using silicon VLSI technology and integrated with ferro-electric liquid crystals. Amongst other uses, the filter can be implemented to form a digitally tunable laser.

A hybrid integration process is provided for fabrication of an optical cross-connect switching apparatus (8). The switching apparatus (8) is based on the deflection of light beams in electro-optic materials by applying an electric field across electrodes of an appropriate configuration. The integration process includes fabrication of a substrate (e.g. silicon substrate 30) with 2D imaging optics from polymeric materials (or silica), fabrication of the light deflecting element, and assembly of the deflecting element on the substrate with imaging optics. The fabrication of the light deflecting element includes fabrication of a LN (lithium niobate) block (12). The LN block (12) assembled in an optical switching apparatus includes a two-dimensional waveguide (14) formed on a surface of the LN block (12) and an electrode on a surface of the LN block.
