The present invention relates to a water absorbing composition comprising a hygroscopic, deliquescent material encapsulated in a matrix of a polymeric material. The deliquescent material has a critical relative humidity of at least 5% at 25°C, while the polymeric material is preferably a polymer or a mixture of polymers, having a water vapour permeability of at least 1,000 x 10-13 cm3*cm/(cm2*s*Pa) at 0°C, 1 atm. The water absorbing composition can be produced by combining and subsequent spray drying of a solution comprising the water absorbing material and a solution of the polymeric material. The invention further relates to an article comprising the absorbing composition integrated in a fibrous material and to the use of the latter for dehumidifying air in air conditioning, industrial processes, protective clothes, consumer electronics, pharmaceutical preparations and food preparations. Preferably, the article is a personal protection equipment article.

A salt or CaO coated with hydrophobic nanoparticles comprises an inner part and an outer coating, forming a particle with a permeable membrane keeping liquid inside and letting gas pass. Said inner part comprises at least one selected from a salt and CaO and said outer coating comprises hydrophobic nanoparticles. Known machines and processes can get enhanced functionality the particles comprising salt and nanoparticles. For machines working according to matrix and hybrid principles the particles can act as a matrix, thereby substituting expensive matrix material. Further applications include storage of chemical energy. A device is adapted to perform an absorption process, said device comprising at least one particle. Advantages include that corrosion is reduced or even eliminated. The long term stability of absorption machines is increased and migration of salt in liquid and gas phase is avoided.

In order to remove fluorine from a zinc containing solution before zinc electro-refining in lower cost, fluorine is removed by adsorption from a zinc containing solution (leached solution) utilizing the character of the predetermined iron compound or zinc compound which can adsorb fluorine in an acid solution and desorb fluorine in an alkaline solution. The fluorine adsorbent/desorbent having adsorbed fluorine is treated in an alkaline solution, to desorb the fluorine. This makes it possible to regenerate the fluorine adsorbent/desorbent. Further, an electrolytic solution for zinc electro-refining can be prepared in lower cost, thus total zinc refining costs can be reduced.

The composition and the molding can be formulated so as to attain a different equilibrium humidity by replacement with a resin which is of the same kind but has a different specific gravity. Environments suitable for the preservation of a variety of products can be easily formed. The moisture absorbent composition comprises a thermoplastic resin compounded with a moisture absorbent having an equilibrium vapor pressure, the moisture absorbent being magnesium sulfate represented by the formula MgSO 4 · nH 2 O (wherein 0‰¤n‰¤3). The surface of the moisture absorbent is coated with a fatty acid metal salt so that the moisture absorbent comes to have a secondary particle size of 1-40 µm when dispersed in the thermoplastic resin. It has become possible to increase/reduce the equilibrium humidity by a given value with an increase/decrease in specific gravity by a certain value without changing the kind of the thermoplastic resin.

Toxic substances such as heavy metals are extracted from a medium using a sorbent composition. The composition is derived by sulfidation of red mud, which contains hydrated ferric oxides derived from the Bayer processing of bauxitic ores. Exemplary sulfidizing compounds are H 2 S, Na 2 S, K 2 S, (NH 4 ) 2 S, CaS x . The sulfur content typically is from about 0.2 to about 10% above the residual sulfur in the red mud. The sulfidized red mud is effective for sorbing some contaminants, such as mercury, which are not effectively sorbed by red mud. Conversely, red mud is effective for sorbing other contaminants, such as arsenic, which are not effectively sorbed by sulfidized red mud. Thus, some aspects of the invention utilize combinations of red mud and sulfidized red mud, which potentially can allow for the extraction of a wider range of contaminants.
