The data system is operable to communicate data therein in a format which includes data chunks which have been encrypted and obfuscated and are defined by one or more data maps. Moreover, the data system is susceptible to being configured for providing secure data communication and storage, simultaneously with providing a high degree of user privacy. The data system has potential widespread use in a wide spectrum of applications.

According to various aspects, exemplary embodiments are disclosed of devices, systems, and methods related to tracking location of operator control units for locomotives. In an exemplary embodiment, an operator control unit includes a user interface configured to receive one or more commands from an operator for controlling a locomotive. The operator control unit also includes a global positioning system (GPS) receiver configured to receive location information of the operator control unit, and a wireless communication device. The wireless communication device is configured to transmit command data corresponding to the one or more commands and location data corresponding to the location information to a machine control unit on the locomotive.

Railyard management system for managing, assembling, disassembling and validating train consists and monitoring railcars in the railyard. The system provides for the collection of data and the movement of data from lower processing levels to higher processing levels, where an inference engine draws inferences regarding the current state of railcars and train consists within the railyard. The inferences are assigned confidence levels based on the methods and available data used to draw the inferences. The system can be used to track the location and orientation of railcars in the railyard and to validate order and orientation of assets in a train consist.

Embodiments of the invention have been particularly developed for monitoring and analysis of dwell time in respect of trains. In some examples, the technology makes use of depth-sensitive sensor equipment to monitor activity in three dimensions, including train and passenger and activity, thereby to identify artefacts of dwell time events.
