Abstract: A low-pressure mercury discharge lamp according to the invention is provided with a tubular discharge vessel (10) with end portions (11, 11') having an ionizable filling comprising mercury and rare gas. An electrode (20, 20') is arranged in the discharge vessel (10) at each end portion (11, 11') and is fastened to current supply conductors (30A, 30B; 30A', 30B') which are passed through the end portion (11, 11') to outside the discharge vessel (10). At least one current supply conductor (30A, 30B) is covered with an amalgam in a zone (35A, 35B) which is at a distance from the end portion (11) via a path along the current supply conductor (30A, 30B). The amalgam can be comparatively easily applied in the lamp according to the invention.

Abstract: An electrodeless fluorescent lamp comprises a discharge vessel (10) having a re-entrant portion (11) for housing a solenoid (12) for initiating a discharge in the vessel by means of an RF electromagnetic field. A primary amalgam (18) for releasing mercury vapour is placed at the tip of an exhaust tube (17) where the primary amalgam (18) can be maintained at a suitable temperature for controlling the mercury vapour pressure. The primary amalgam (18) does not provide rapid run-up of light output. To provide rapid run-up of light output a piece of Indium (20,30) is placed on the re-entrant portion (11) at a position where it is rapidly heated by the discharge. The Indium may be coated with the layers of a coating C including phosphor.

Abstract: A neon lamp providing white light is disclosed. The lamp is operated to stimulate the neon to emit both ultraviolet light, and visible red light. A phosphor coating responsive to the ultraviolet light produces a complementary green blue light that in combination with the neon red light yields a white light. The lamp is small, efficient, and not subject to the effects of cold that cause mercury based fluorescent lamps to operate poor in cold conditions typical of out of door operation.

The largest cross-section (A2) inside the tube wall of at least one of the dome portions (11d) is at least 1.8 times but at maximum 2.2 times the smallest cross-section (A3) inside the tube wall between the arc-shaped inner bordering wall (11b) of the bent connection member (11) and the narrowing indentation (11c).

The lamp according to the invention has a comparatively low mercury consumption.
