In a method of initiating remote maintenance of a private branch exchange (N) connected to a public telephone network (VSt) by a servicing unit (SPC) which is also connected to the public telephone network (VSt), a password is generated in the master terminal which is also connected to the public telephone network (Vst). The password is forwarded both to the private branch exchange (N) and to the servicing unit (SPC). Only when the servicing unit (SPC) forwards to the private branch exchange (N) a password which matches the password stored there can the servicing unit carry out remote maintenance. This prevents remote maintenance activities in a private branch exchange (N) by non-authorised servicing units (SPC).

A method of mediation of traffic across a particular interface between the Advanced Intelligent Network operated by a local exchange carrier and an outside service provider is disclosed. The particular interface is defined between an application by a non-local exchange carrier service provider for some form of enhanced telephone service requiring use of the Advanced Intelligent Network and a shared execution environment interpreter on the other side of the interface. Mediation is conducted by the shared execution interpreter that is run on a local exchange carrier operated service control point. The shared execution interpreter enforces sufficient rules so that the local exchange carrier does not require knowledge of the details of implementation of the service providers application. The methodology defines a unique transaction identifier that is defined and known on the local exchange carrier side of the interface. A table is created carrying the unique transaction identifiers with service process identifiers generated by various service provider applications. In this way, the shared execution environment interpreter can pass messages and instructions across the interface to the service provider's application that only reference the application's internally generated service process identifier. This isolates the service provider application from unnecessary information about the operation of the network and the operation of other service providers services. Mediation rules include testing of tables to determine whether a directory number referenced in a message request from a service provider application is a customer of the service provider, whether trunk group routing requests are valid for the service providers and whether any access to, or particular levels of access to, certain network elements are authorised for the service provider requesting same.

A method for automated service provisioning for telecommunications companies. A caller establishes a connection with the company and requests one or more service changes. The caller's voice or DTMF tone information is converted into data compatible with the processors of the automated method. The caller's data is then validated to determine whether the caller is an existing customer entitled to the requested service. Upon proper validation, a service order is automatically generated, and the service order is processed. In some embodiments, a log feature logs the caller's telephone number to enable a subsequent dial back confirming that the order has been executed.

An authentication system of a terminal on a public switched telephone network comprises a security node associated with a local exchange (10) and a network terminal (14). For one-way authentication, the terminal (14) responds to a call initiation by sending a unique authentication code (R) comprising a number (m) and a secret key (Sj) encrypted according to a first algorithm (F), the secret key being specific to the terminal. The security node constructs the expected authentication code (E) from the number (m), using the first algorithm (F) and a second key which is a function of a terminal identification number (TN), and compares the expected code (E) with the received code (R). In two-way authentication, the security node responds to the call initiation by sending a transaction number (n) to the terminal (14) encrypted according to a second algorithm (fj). The terminal (14) generates the authentication code (R) as a function of the first algorithm (F), the secret key (Sj) and the transaction number (n). The authentication code (R) is sent back to the security node. An expected code (E) is compared with the received one (R) in the same way. In both cases, a match between expected and received authentication codes (E and R) constitutes authentication of the terminal (14), allowing the user access to the network.

A method of mediating message traffic across interfaces open to third parties in an Advanced Intelligent Network for a switched telephone system is disclosed. Network utilization is monitored by maintaining message counts at the open interfaces and rejecting messages or terminating access via the interface when an excessive rate of traffic is detected. Access to data bases stored in service control points is used to determine if the sender indentified in the contents of the message is the same as the entity authorized to use the physical port upon which the message was received. Also, customer records in the service control point are tested to determine if the sender of the message is authorized to affect the call progress of an affected customer directory number identified in the message. Upon termination of the message traffic across a port, a defaut application is activated so that other network elements do not have to rely on timeouts to continue processing of calls.

For each attribute of each object, a CMIP/SNMP mapper component (44) converts the CMIP object class name, attribute name and distinguished name of the object into the corresponding SNMP object identifier and the CMIP attribute value into the corresponding SNMP attribute value and this data is stored in MIB (46). An SNMP application component (48) receives requests for information from a network manager of a local network. In order to service a valid request, the SNMP application component (48) retrieves the required data from MIB (46) and supplies this data to the network manager for the local network using the SNMP protocol. For changes in the values of certain attributes of certain objects, the SNMP application component issues traps to the manager of the local network.

In an alternate configuration, a signaling message intercept unit (512) is interposed between a signal transfer point (108) (STP) and end switches (103, 104), to determine which of two or more switches should receive a message, based on the directory number, a circuit identifier or a message index of the received message, and forwards the message to the correct switch.
