The invention relates to a method for an overtaking assistance system for a vehicle. The vehicle is fitted with surroundings detecting sensor systems for detecting objects in a vehicle's own lane and an adjacent lane laterally behind the vehicle. The space in front of the vehicle is preferably also detected by surroundings detecting sensors. An autonomous entry to an adjacent lane is only initiated when a first vehicle is detected in the adjacent lane. The first vehicle is taken as reference for a speed of vehicles in the overtaking lane. In addition, it is assumed that a second vehicle rapidly approaching the first vehicle from behind in the same lane has noted the first vehicle and will adapt its speed to the speed of the first vehicle.
