Methods of preparing single walled carbon nanotubes from a metal catalyst having deposited thereon fullerenes are provided. Fullerenes are deposited onto a metal catalyst precursor or metal catlayst. In the presence of a carbon containing gas, the metal catalyst precursor/fullerene composition is then exposed to conditions suitable for reducing the metal catalyst precursor, for subliming the fullerene and for growing single walled carbon nanotubes. The fullerenes form the end caps for the resulting single walled carbon nanotubes, which are uniform in diameter.

An arrangement comprising one or more layers of fullerene in contact with one side of a metal layer and a solid carbon source in contact with the other side of metal layer is prepared. The fullerene/metal layer/solid carbon source arrangement is then heated to a temperature below where the fullerenes sublime. Single walled carbon nanotubes are grown on the fullerene side of the metal layer.

It has now been found that highly advantageous three-dimensional, macroscopic assemblages of randomly oriented carbon fibrils can be prepared which have relatively uniform physical properties along one, preferably two and most desirably three-dimensional axis of the three-dimensional assemblage. Preferred compositions prepared according to the methods of the invention have uniform physical properties along at least one dimensional axis and have relatively isotropic physical properties in at least one plane of the assemblage and most desirably are isotropic throughout the entire three-dimensional structure.
