摘要: An apparatus (10) promoting a spinal fusion between neighboring vertebrae (16, 18) is disclosed. Apparatus (10) may be located within the intervertebral disc space and preferably includes a pair of engaging plates (12, 14) for contacting the vertebrae (16, 18). An alignment device may be used to alter the vertical height (20) between the engaging plates (12, 14) to customize the apparatus (10) to fit a given patient. In one embodiment, the alignment device includes two turnbuckles (250, 270) and two pairs of cam blocks (260, 261; 280, 281) for adjusting the height between the engaging plates (202, 204). In another embodiment, the alignment device includes three turnbuckles (540, 550, 560) and three pairs of cam blocks (544, 545; 554, 555; 564, 565) for adjusting the height between the engaging plates (502, 504). In another embodiment, the alignment device includes three screws (640, 650, 660) and three cam blocks (644, 654, 664) for adjusting the height between the engaging plates (602, 604). In another embodiment, the alignment device includes four screws and four cam blocks for adjusting the height between the engaging plates. The alignment device may be adapted to vary the height (20) between the engaging plates (12, 14) such that the height of the apparatus (10) proximate the anterior end (22) is greater than that proximate the posterior end (24), whereby the natural lordosis of the spine is maintained after the apparatus (10) is installed, and such that the height (20) of the apparatus (10) proximate the first side edge (26) is substantially different from the height of the apparatus (10) proximate the second side edge (28), whereby the natural lateral alignment of the spine is maintained after the apparatus (10) is installed. In an alternate embodiment, the apparatus includes a single alignment device that may be used to alter the vertical distance between the engaging plates. The alignment device may include a turnbuckle and a single pair of cam blocks for adjusting the height between the engaging plates (12, 14).

摘要: A surgical cable system and method for securing surgical cable around a portion of a human element (e.g., bone) is described. The surgical cable system may include a connector (200) and a tensioner (50). The connector may be adapted to hold a pin (204), positionable within the connector, such that the pin may secure the cable within the connector. The pin may be repositioned, after securing the cable, to allow the cable to move freely through the connector. The cable may be oriented within the connector such that the ends of the cable are perpendicular or parallel with respect to each other. The tensioner is preferably adapted to vary the tension of the cable. The cable may be passed through the connector, around a portion of a human bone, and back through the connector. The cable may be tensioned by use of the tensioner and secured into position within the connector. The connector may include a locking portion (206, 208, 210) for engaging a protrusion (211) formed on the pin. The engagement of the protrusion with the locking portion preferably inhibits rotation of the pin.

摘要: A spinal fixation implant system for correction and fixation of the human spine to facilitate an anatomically correct fusion. The spinal fixation system may include a connector, a spinal rod, a spinal fixation component, a sleeve, and a fastener. The spinal fixation component preferably includes a fixation device such as a hook or screw for securing the spinal rod to vertebrae of the thoracic or lumbar spine. The spinal fixation component preferably includes a threaded end on its top that is adapted to receive the fastener. The fixation component may include a body having a tapered cavity for engaging the receiving end of the connector. Tightening of the fastener preferably downwardly translates the sleeve over the fixation component body to force the connector through the tapered cavity, which compresses the receiving end about the spinal rod to fixation connect the spinal rod and the spinal fixation component. In an alternate embodiment, assembly pliers may be used to move the connector into the tapered cavity. The fixation component may also include a rotatable fixation member.

摘要: An instrumentation set may include insertion instruments for forming an implant between bone structures. The insertion instruments may include a spreader (400) and a separator (300). The bone structures may be vertebrae. Implant members (12) may be attached to the spreader and positioned between the bone structures. The separator may be inserted into the spreader to establish a desired separation distance between the implant members. Connectors (14) may be inserted into the implant members to join the implant members together and form the implant. The insertion instruments may be removed. A seater (1100) may be used to set the position of the connectors relative to the implant members to inhibit disassembly of the implant.

摘要: A spinal stabilization system (100) may be formed in a patient. In some embodiments, a minimally invasive procedure may be used to form a spinal stabilization system (100) in a patient. Bone fastener assemblies (102) may be coupled to vertebrae. Each bone fastener assembly (102) may include a bone fastener (108) and a collar (112). The collar (112) may be rotated and/or angulated relative to the bone fastener (108). Detachable members may be coupled to the collar (112) to allow for formation of the spinal stabilization system (100) through a small skin incision. The detachable members may allow for alignment of the collars (112) to facilitate insertion of an elongated member (104) in the collars (112). An elongated member (104) may be positioned in the collars (112) and a closure member (106) may be used to secure the elongated member (106) to the collars (112).

In an embodiment, a spinal compression plate (30) may include two or more plates (32, 34) coupled together form an adjustable-length plate. Movement of plates (32, 34) in a spinal compression plate (30) may be uni-directional. Compression of a spinal compression plate movement may mimic natural settling of bones in a spine and/or distribute at least a portion of a vertebral load to an implant positioned between two vertebrae. Maintaining at least a portion of the vertebral load on an insert may increase bone growth and increase fusion between an implant and surrounding vertebrae.

In an embodiment, the spinal fixation system (20) includes a plate (22), a coupling member (30), a locking system (116) for substantially locking the coupling member (30) in a desired position, and an anchoring system (100) to secure the coupling member in the locking system (116). The plate (22) may have a hole (24) that allows the coupling member (30) to couple to the plate (20) with a bone. At least a portion of the coupling member (30) may swivel in the hole so that a bottom end of the member may extend at a plurality of angles substantially oblique to the plate (22). The locking system (116) may lock the coupling member (30) in desired position relative to the plate (22). The anchoring system (100) may secure the coupling member (30) in the locking system (116) to inhibit the coupling system from detaching from the locking system when stressed. An assembly tool (114) may be used to engage and disengage the anchoring system (100) during the installation or removal of the spinal fixation system.
