Sudden loss of auxiliary brake force can be felt as very bad drivability of the vehicle, a situation that typically occurs in case of low friction between road and tyres or if the auxiliary brakes are down controlled to avoid engine (2) stop. By use of a control system (30), these situations can be avoided. The control system (30) comprises detecting means, signalling means and means for computing and applying (35) the braking effect to the foundation brakes to compensate for the loss of auxiliary braking force. Disclosed is also a method for applying braking effect to the foundation brakes of a motor vehicle.

The invention relates to a method for measuring and estimating a brake factor (Bf) in a vehicle brake system, said vehicle (1 ) comprising a towing vehicle (2) and a trailer (3) having a plurality of wheel axles (4, 5, 6, 7), wherein said method comprises: initiating a controlled braking manoeuvre involving at least a first wheel axle (4) and a second wheel axle (5); and obtaining values representing said brake factor (Bn; BR) for said wheel first wheel axle (4) and said second wheel axle (5) by means of a control unit (13) which is provided with a brake adaptation function to obtain a brake balance between said towing vehicle (2) and said trailer (3).
