A system and method for tracking a tracking device for use with a surgical navigation system is provided. The system and method can include at least one tracking device having a plurality of faces. The faces can be operable to generate a signal upon activation. Also included is a face activation module that activates a selected one of the faces upon receipt of an activation signal. The system can also include a visibility module that generates the activation signal and receives the signal from the face to generate tracking data for the tracking device, along with a face switching module that generates a face control signal to activate a different face based on the tracking data.

A method of determining surgical parameters in computer-assisted surgery system is provided. The surgical parameters are for guiding an operator in inserting a hip joint implant in a femur. The method comprises the steps of: i) digitizing a frame of reference of the pelvis, the frame of reference of the pelvis being trackable in space for position and orientation; ii) digitizing a first frame of reference of the femur as a function of the frame of reference of the pelvis; iii) obtaining a reference orientation for the frame of reference of the femur with respect to the frame of reference of the pelvis; iv) digitizing a second frame of reference of the femur with respect to said reference orientation as a function of the frame of reference of the pelvis, after initiation of implant reduction; whereby surgical parameters associating the femur to the pelvis are determined as a difference between the first and second frames of reference of the femur.

Alignment precision technology, in which a system accesses image data of a bone to which a reference marker array is fixed. The system generates a three-dimensional representation of the bone and the reference markers, defines a coordinate system for the three-dimensional representation, and determines locations of the reference markers relative to the coordinate system. The system accesses intra-operative image data that includes the bone and a mobile marker array that is attached to an instrument used in a surgical procedure. The system co-registers the intra-operative image data with the three-dimensional representation by matching the reference markers included in the intra-operative image data to the locations of the reference markers. The system determines locations of the mobile markers in the co-registered image and determines a three-dimensional spatial position and orientation of the instrument relative to the bone.

A surgical guidance system is disclosed that allows for real-time imaging and patient monitoring during a surgical procedure. The system can include an MRI system for generating real-time images of the patient while surgery is being performed. Prior to surgery, a surgical plan can be created using a planning interface. A control unit receives the real-time image data and the surgical plan, and monitors the image data based on parameters included in the surgical plan. The control-unit monitoring occurs in real-time while the surgical procedure is being performed. The control unit can detect deviations from the surgical plan and/or high-risk patient conditions and instruct an alert unit to issue an alert based on the detected conditions.
