A plurality of measuring electrodes are located in contact with the first surface of the selected region of tissue as well. Electropotential and impedance are measured at one or more locations. An agent may be introduced into the region of tissue to enhance electrophysiological characteristics. The condition of the tissue is determined based on the electropotential and impedance profile at different depths of the epithelium, tissue, or organ, together with an estimate of the functional changes in the epithelium due to altered ion transport and electrophysiological properties of the tissue.

A method and system are provided for determining a condition of a selected region of tissue to facilitate the location of surgical resection margins. Electropotential and impedance are measured at one or more locations in an area of the body where tissue is to be removed. An agent may be introduced into the region of tissue to enhance electrophysiological characteristics of that tissue. The condition of the tissue is measured by electropotential and impedance profile. Differences in the profile are used to determine the borders between normal and abnormal tissue so as to facilitate what tissue to resect. Methods and apparatus are also disclosed to determine the efficacy of various therapies.

A system for evaluating nervous system function of a subject including generally an accelerometer sensor, a stimulus electrode assembly, and a portable device to which the sensor and electrode assembly are connected. The sensor measures the magnitude of the (stimulus evoked) movement of a body part of the subject along at least one axis of three dimensional space. The device contains electrical circuits for processing data from the sensor, generating stimuli to the electrode assembly, and timing both the extraction of sensor information and the delivery of stimuli. The sensor has a suction chamber for attaching the sensor to the desired body part site by static suction. To evaluate the nervous system function the magnitude of the monitored sensed (acceleration) movement is compared with a control value. When the nervous system being evaluated is the peripheral nerve of one side of the face, the control value can be determined by evoking and measuring movement on the opposite side of the face. For this embodiment, two pairs of electrodes are attached to a headband which holds them simultaneously against opposite sides of the face and a switch communicates the desired pair with the portable device.

A body-borne sound sensor has already been used for the analysis of human and animal joints, wherein the sounds that arise from the friction in joints or during the formation of cracks in bones are analyzed in greater detail. In order to ensure an optimum transmission of sound to the sensor, the invention provides that between the body-borne sound sensor pressure surface (12), which is perpendicular to its measurement axis (11), and the skin there is provided a transmission wedge (15) which, as has been shown, brings about improved transmission of sound, and it is therefore possible to provide a more accurate analysis of the sound spectrum for a diagnosis of the joints and bones of humans and animals.
