An acetabular prosthesis assembly for implantation into a prepared acetabulum has a generally hemispherically-shaped cup (1). The cup (1) has a substantially hemispherically-shaped inner surface (2) and a substantially hemispherically-shaped outer surface (3) defining a wall therebetween. The wall has a plurality of generally circular apertures (6, 7, 8) therein for receiving a bone screw. The wall surrounding each aperture has a bevelled surface extending toward the outer surface (3) followed by a generally cylindrical surface extending from the bevelled surface to the outer surface of the cup. The generally cylindrical surface of each aperture (6, 7, 8) is threaded with threads of predetermined diameter and pitch. A bone screw has a first screw thread having a pitch and diameter for engagement with the thread of the cylindrical surface on the cup and a second screw thread having a major diameter and a pitch greater than the predetermined diameter and pitch of the cylindrical surface. A plastic insert for attachment to the inner surface of the cup is provided.

The present invention relates to a prostheses and instruments for joint repair and replacement. In a transosseous core approach of the present invention, the joint is entered through a pathway provided in a portion of a joint bone. Such pathway is preferably made by taking out a bone core from the bone in or adjacent to the joint, wherever possible without substantially compromising physical integrity and physiological viability of the joint. Typically the main route for the transosseous core with a less-accessible bone of the joint in order to facilitate treatment of articular surfaces and/or other structures in the joint. The transosseous pathway into the joint is preferably provided by novel surgical instruments such as a core cutter (30), cartilage punch (40), hemostatic device (60) and retractable axial/transaxial cutting device (33). Implants modules are also provided which can be inserted into the joint through the transosseous pathway and assembled in situ inside the joint to form an implant assembly.

The invention concerns acetabular cups for prostheses. The inventive acetabular cup is essentially characterized in that it comprises a cup (20) with a generally hemispherical external shape, the cup including an open hollow housing (21), and an insert (23) wherein is provided a hemispherical cavity (24) into which is urged to co-operate in rotation a spherical head, the insert having an external shape substantially matching the housing (21) so as to be plugged therein, the cup (20) including a central base (30) constituting the polar cap of the cup (20), a specific number of cup portions (31-33) and means (34) for associating the cup portions (31-33) with at least the central base (30) to form the cup with its housing (21). The invention is useful for producing a prosthesis, in particular a hip prosthesis or the like.

La présente invention concerne une cupule cotyloïdienne (7) comprenant une coquille hémisphérique (3) destinée à être appliquée dans la cavité cotyloïdienne (7), et un élément de blocage (5) de ladite coquille (3) ou insert.
