It is an object of the present invention to provide a coating apparatus (100) and a coating method that can effectively prevent thick coating and the like in a bar coater having a coating bar (2) and a fulcrum (4) supporting the coating bar (2) from the below. The coating apparatus (100) comprising a coating liquid-adhering device (10) for adhering the coating liquid across an entire width of one surface of a continuously travelling belt-shaped body (W); a coating thickness-adjusting device located downstream from the coating liquid-adhering device (10) with respect to the travelling direction of the belt-shaped body (W), and adjusting a thickness of a layer of the coating liquid adhered to the belt-shaped body by the coating liquid-adhering device (10) into a predetermined thickness; and a drying-preventative device for preventing the coating liquid at the coating thickness-adjusting device from drying.

There are provided a method and unit (1) for producing highly abrasion-resistant protective coverings, in particular for floor and work surfaces. The method includes preparing a mixture (3) of a powdered abrasion-resistant substance (4) (e.g. corundum) evenly dispersed in a polymer resin (5) suitable for subsequent polymerization and/or cross-linking; applying the mixture (3) to a substantially dry sheet material (7) (in particular, nonimpregnated paper or a dried preimpregnated material with a low wet residue); and drying the sheet material (7) coated with the mixture (3). Tests have shown the covering so formed imparts to the surfaces on which it is applied an abrasion resistance superior to that obtainable using conventional methods (e.g. in which the abrasion-resistant powder is applied, pure or dispersed in a resin, to a wet preimpregnated material).

A method and an apparatus for producing planographic printing plate precursors. In a production line for planographic printing plate precursors, a first applying device (14), a first drying device (22), a second applying device (16), a second drying device (24), a third applying device (18) and a third drying device (26) are sequentially disposed along a direction of an aluminum web (12), which is a support for the planographic printing plate precursors, is conveyed. Curl of the aluminum web (12) is adjusted by each of the applying devices (14,16,18). Since the curl adjustment for the aluminum web (12) is conducted simultaneously with or before applying a photosensitive material onto the aluminum web, the coating film is not damaged and fogging is not caused.

A method of manufacturing a shadow mask by making use of a coating apparatus, wherein a gravure roll (23) 20 mm to 60 mm in diameter is disposed below a metallic thin plate (21) and any supporting member is not disposed at an opposite side portion of the metallic thin plate (21) to be contacted with the gravure roll (23). An etching resistant liquid is fed onto the gravure roll (23) being rotated in a direction opposite to that of the metallic thin plate (21) and at a peripheral speed of 4 to 25 times as high as that of a feeding speed of the metallic thin plate (21), and an excessive portion of the etching resistant liquid is wiped away by the doctor blade (28) before the etching resistant liquid is transferred to the metallic thin plate (21) thereby to form an etching resistant layer on the metallic thin plate.

The process and apparatus of the present invention teaches how to treat a well-integrated woven or non-woven web (W) of hydrophobic fibers to make selective areas hydrophyllic. It also can be used to make a web of hydrophyllic fibers selectively hydrophobic. It uses a plurality of selectively adjustable shutters (69) on an applicator roll (60) rotating in a bath of liquid material (66) to place the liquid material (66) on selective areas (C) of the moving web (W). The web (W) may be non-woven and the fibers are hydrophobic in nature, e.g. dry-laid or melt-blown polypropylene or polyethylene fibers or spun-bonded hydrophobic filaments. A woven web (W) made of cotton or other hydrophyllic fibers may also be used if the end result is to create partially hydrophobic areas (C) on a hydrophyllic web (W). The areas (C) of liquid are positioned on the web (W) only where desired so as to eliminate the excessive cost of unwanted and unnecessary coating material.
