A composition and method is described for providing conformal protective or decorative polymer coatings on metals such as aluminum, copper, iron, steel, zinc, and their formation by dip autopolymerization. In accordance with the present invention, an acidic solution of organic monomer undergoes autopolymerization upon contact with a metal substrate, thereby forming a polymeric coating on the substrate. The method comprises providing the acidic monomer solution, dipping the metal substrate to be coated for a prescribed for a prescribed period of time depending on the thickness of the coating desired, and then removing the substrate from the solution. Importantly, the polymerization requires no application of external driving force, such as thermal or electrical energy. The coatings thus formed are up to 50 microns thick, and conform to the shape of the substrate. These coatings further have uniform thickness, and excellent thermal stability and protective properties. In one preferred embodiment of the present invention, the composition comprises an acidic solution of an organic electron acceptor monomer that undergoes autopolymerization in contact with a metal substrate, thereby forming a polymeric coating on the substrate. In another preferred embodiment of the present invention, the composition comprises an acidic solution of an organic electron acceptor monomer and an organic electron donor monomer that undergo autopolymerization in contact with a metal substrate, thereby forming a polymeric coating on the substrate. A resin coating is formed on a metal surface using an aqueous autodepositing resin composition that contains oxidizing agent, acid, and carboxyl-functional and/or hydroxyl-functional water-dispersible or water-soluble resin and, optionally, metal ions; the resulting coating, while still in its uncured condition, is subjected to post-treatment with an aqueous solution containing from 0.5 to 5.0 g/L of amine and from 10 to 100 g/L (solids) of water-soluble amino resin molecules that bear at least two alkoxymethylamino, methylolamino, and/or imino groups; and the coating is then dried and cured. This provides a highly anticorrosive coating on the metal, and contrary to an analogous process in which the post-treatment solution contains amino resin but not amine, the post-treatment solution remains stable and provides continuing high quality coating performance even after a considerable amount of metal surface per unit volume of post-treatment solution has been processed.

The adhesion and/or corrosion resistance of a autodeposited coating can be improved by rinsing the uncured coating with an aqueous treatment solution that has a pH between 7 and 11 and contains between 0.05 and 5 w/o of anions derived from phosphonic acids, preferably anions of 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid. The method is particularly useful on leaf springs and other metallic objects with surfaces of high carbon and/or shot blasted steel, and is particularly useful in conjunction with an autodeposition bath containing internally stabilized poly [vinylidene chloride] latex, hydrofluoric acid, ferric fluoride, and hydrogen peroxide.

Improved autodeposited coatings on metallic surfaces are formed by contacting the metallic surfaces with an autodepositing composition comprising an acidic aqueous coating solution containing dispersed solid resin particles of either an internally stabilized or externally stabilized vinylidene chloride polymer, an exemplary internally stabilized polymer being prepared from vinylidene chloride and a monomeric surfactant which includes an inorganic ionizable group, and an exemplary externally stabilized polymer being prepared from vinylidene chloride and a reactive comonomer, the resulting resin particles having surfactant adsorbed thereon, said autodeposited coatings having extremely good corrosion resistant properties without treatment with a reaction rinse such as a chromium rinse. Curing of autodeposited coatings of various types, including those mentioned above, by treatment with water or steam is disclosed also.

L'invention se rapporte en général au domaine technique des émulsions autodéposantes et aux procédés de revêtement sélectif de surfaces métalliques correspondants, les surfaces spécialement concernées étant celles soumises à des bains acides au cours d'un traitement de gravure des circuits de plaquettes électroniques. Un revêtement de résine photoactif est autodéposé à partir d'une émulsion sur un substrat métallique afin de protéger sélectivement le substrat d'un milieu corrosif tel que ceux utilisés par les procédés d'attaque à l'acide. Un agent acide et un agent oxydant sont inclus dans l'émulsion pour que la résine photoactive s'autodépose quand le substrat est immergé dans l'émulsion. Le revêtement qui en résulte peut être exposé à une radiation actinique formant une image et traité dans une solution alcaline pour développer l'image créée. Dans les cas où l'émulsion et le procédé sont utilisés pour produire des plaquettes de circuits imprimés, la surface métallique découverte pendant le développement est éliminée par attaque à l'acide, ce qui ne laisse que les parties de la surface pourvues du revêtement. Les surfaces pourvues du revêtement qui en résultent constituent le tracé des circuits de la plaquette.
