An object is to provide a polyvinyl acetal film which has excellent transparency and can suppress a thermal cracking phenomenon. The above object is achieved by providing a polyvinyl acetal film in which a ratio between a composite modulus (GPa) of the highest part in a convex part and a composite modulus (GPa) of the lowest part in a concave part on a surface of a film on a side in contact with glass, calculated by a nanoindentation measurement using a scanning probe microscope, is 0.90 or less, when a laminated glass is formed. In addition, the above object is achieved by providing a polyvinyl acetal film in which a ratio between a hardness (GPa) of the highest part in the convex part and a hardness (GPa) of the lowest part in the concave part, calculated by the SPM nanoindentation measurement, is 0.90 or less.

Provided are a polyvinyl acetal sheet which is excellent in adhesion to glass, easy in control of adhesion, little colored, highly transparent and excellent in penetration resistance even under high-temperature conditions when the sheet is used for laminated glass or the like, a process for its production and a process for producing polyvinyl acetal particles used for the sheet. The polyvinyl acetal sheet is produced by molding polyvinyl acetal particles into a sheet with a degree of acetalization of from 75.0 to 84.0 mass% and with a porosity of from 60 to 85%. The polyvinyl acetal particles are preferably produced by an acetalization reaction of 100 parts by mass of a polyvinyl alcohol and from 40 to 75 parts by mass of an aldehyde in the presence of an acid catalyst at a reaction temperature of from 20 to 60°C, and the acetalization reaction comprises supplying the polyvinyl alcohol, the aldehyde and the acid catalyst to a reactor to bring about acetalization, discharging a reaction mixture from the reactor after the degree of acetalization of the produced polyvinyl acetal has reached 13 mass%, and subjecting the discharged reaction mixture to an aging reaction.

A substrate is coated with a hydrophilic layer(s) or coatings(s) that includes, for example, amorphous carbon in a form of diamond-like carbon (DLC). In certain embodiments, the DLC inclusive layer may be doped with at least one polar inducing dopant (e.g., Boron, Nitrogen, and/or any other suitable polar inducing dopant) in order to make the layer more polar and thus more hydrophilic so as to have a lower contact angle υ (e.g., no greater than about 10 degrees in certain embodiments, and more preferably no greater than about 8 degrees).

This invention relates to thermoplastic interlayers for laminated safety glass with superior vacuum de-airing at elevated temperatures and superior tacking and edge sealing properties. The sheeting has surface pattern on at least one of the surfaces characterized by flat surfaces with substantially uninterrupted channels for air flow in at least two intersecting directions. The channels allow for rapid de-airing while the area roughness parameter ratio ARp/ARt in the range of 0.52 to 0.62, ARt being less than 32 νm, and area kurtosis less than 2.5, allow for ease of tacking of the interlayer onto glass and edge sealing after de-airing has been completed. Said surface pattern may also be superimposed onto a pattern which is generated by melt fracture or other means on at least one side to enhance de-airing and aid edge sealing.

A laminar structure comprised of at least one layer of glass and a sheet of plasticized PVB containing an adhesion control agent is provided wherein pin point pockets of air which are entrapped in said sheet coalesce and cause delamination of said structure, delayed delamination and associated defects are prevented by adding a nucleating agent with the plasticized PVB by coating the sheet or glass surface with a nucleating agent, by extruding the PVB sheet with the nucleating agent in the composition, or by forming the nucleating agent in situ during the extrusion or lamination process.
