The invention provides a method for preparing sulfur-containing compounds, the method comprising reacting a donor compound comprising at least one sulfur having at least one lone pair of electrons, with an acceptor compound; wherein the reaction occurs in the presence of a catalyst capable of activating the sulfur having at least one lone pair of electrons. The invention also provides sulfur-containing compounds of the formula:

2,4-pentanedionemonosulfonic acid is prepared by reacting chlorosulfonic acid with 2,4-pentanedione, preferably in the presence of an anhydrous solvent. The method of this invention generally yields 2,4-pentanedionemonosulfonic acid in excess of about 75 percent. The novel pentanedionesulfonic acid, 2,4-pentanedionemonosulfonic acid (acetylacetone sulfonic acid) is disclosed.
