The present invention relates to a method and an assembly for fermentation. In one step of the method an agent providing a substance convertible by fermentation is compartmentalized to form a multiplicity of compartments of a first kind (02). An agent which effects the fermentation is also compartmentalized to form a multiplicity of compartments of a second kind (03). The compartments of the first kind (02) and the compartments of the second kind (03) are arranged in a dispersion medium (01) which preserves the compartments of the first kind (02) and the compartments of the second kind (03) and allows mass transfer at least with the compartments of the first kind (02) or with the compartments of the second kind (03). Conditions to allow fermentation in the dispersion medium (01), in the compartments of the first kind (02) and/or in the compartments of the second kind (03) are produced and the substance convertible by fermentation is therefore converted into a fermentation product.

The present invention provides a microfluidic devices and methods of use thereof for the concentration and capture of cells. A pulsed non-Faradic electric field is applied relative to a sample under laminar flow, which results to the concentration and capture of charged analyte. Advantageously, pulse timing is selected to avoid problems associated with ionic screening within the channel. At least one of the electrodes within the channel is coated with an insulating layer to prevent a Faradic current from flowing in the channel. Under pulsed application of a unipolar voltage to the electrodes, charged analyte within the sample is moved towards one of the electrodes via a transient electrophoretic force.

A cell culture system for the production of cells and cell derived products includes a reusable instrumentation base device incorporating hardware to support cell culture growth. A disposable cultureware module including a cell growth chamber is removably attachable to the instrumentation base device. The base device includes microprocessor control and a pump for circulating cell culture medium through the cell growth chamber. The cultureware module is removably attached to the instrumentation base device. Cells are introduced into the cell growth chamber and a source of medium is fluidly attached to the cultureware module. Operating parameters are programmed into the microprocessor control. The pump is operated to circulate the medium through the cell growth chamber to grow cells or cell products therein. The grown cells or cell products are harvested from the cell growth chamber and the cultureware module is then disposed.

Die Erfindung bezieht sich auf ein Verfahren zur Kontrolle eines biotechnologischen Prozesses. Bei diesen biotechnologischen Prozessen werden während eines Prozessverlaufs Ausgangsstoffe mit Hilfe von Biomasse in Produkte umgesetzt und es werden wichtige Prozessparameter für eine Überwachung ermittelt. Während eines Verlaufs des biotechnologischen Prozesses wird periodisch wiederkehrend eine aktuelle Konzentration der im Prozess eingesetzten Biomasse abgeschätzt (1). Dann werden periodisch wiederkehrend aktuelle Messwerte von messbaren Prozessparametern bestimmt (2) und daraus aktuelle Werte für zusätzliche Prozessparameter ermittelt (3). Die aktuellen Messwerte der messbaren Prozessparameter und die aktuellen ermittelten Werte der zusätzlichen Prozessparameter werden auf die jeweils zeitlich korrelierende Konzentration der Biomasse bezogen. Aus einer Kombination der aktuellen Konzentration der Biomasse und den aktuellen Messwerten der messbaren Prozessparameter sowie den ermittelten aktuellen Werten der zusätzlichen Prozessparameter werden dann aktuelle, zellspezifische metabolische Kennzahlen abgeleitet (4), welche dann in Verbindung mit einem deterministischen Prozessmodell verwendet werden (5). Dadurch wird eine biochemische Sicht auf biotechnologische Prozesse, insbesondere des Zellstoffwechsels, geboten. Die aktuellen, zellspezifischen metabolischen Kennzahlen können für eine bessere Regelung des biotechnologischen Prozesses herangezogen werden und um Fehler bei Messsensoren frühzeitig erkennen zu können.
