An integrated intake manifold assembly (10) including a first poppet valve assembly (92) disposed at the air inlet (96) to the manifold (12) to regulate air flow into the manifold; a second poppet valve assembly (108) disposed on the manifold to regulate exhaust gas flow into the air intake system; and a bi-directional camshaft (82) with cams (86,88) for operating simultaneously the manifold vacuum regulating the poppet valves. The valve bodies (14,18) are integrally formed in the wall of the intake manifold. The cams are arranged on the shaft to provide optimum synchronized opening and closing of the related valves. When used on a diesel engine (32), the manifold assembly may further include a swirl valve plate (44) disposed between the manifold and the engine head and having a plurality of ganged swirl valves (50) actuated by levers (28,56,58), connected to the camshaft internally of the manifold and swirl plate, for coordinated motion with the MVR and EGR valves. The valve poppets (92,108) of the MVR and EGR valves are actuated by finger followers (154) actuated by the camshaft to eliminate side loading of the valve stems.

An apparatus for controlling brake force of a vehicle is disclosed. Each cylinders of a vehicle engine has a combustion chamber that receives fuel from a fuel injector and air from an air intake passage. The engine selectively performs a stratified charge combustion and a uniform charge combustion. The stratified charge combustion mode is selected to increase the amount of the air and the fuel supplied to the engine and improve a combusting state of the engine. The apparatus further includes a brake booster for increasing the brake force according to the negative pressure applied thereto. The brake booster is actuated by the negative pressure an amount of which is greater than a predetermined amount. Airflow in the air intake passage is restricted to generate the negative pressure. A fuel injector directly injects the fuel into the cylinder to set the engine to perform the stratified charge combustion. An electronic control unit (ECU) measures the an amount relating to the pressure applied to the brake booster. The ECU actuates the motor means to apply the negative pressure to the brake booster when the amount is smaller than the predetermined value and converts the driving condition of the engine from the stratified charge combustion to the uniform charge combustion.

Vaporized fuel from a fuel vaporisation retaining system of a fuel tank (25) can be taken downstream of the throttle (36) up to the air, and the vaporised fuel from the fuel vaporisation retaining system is taken to the supply line (16) only with a partial number of the combustion chambers (5), especially when there is only one combustion chamber (16) in the internal combustion engine (1).
